Race for the Watershed coming

The third annual race for the watershed is coming on June 13.

A duck derby and 5K run fundraiser benefiting watershed protection projects at Newlin Grist Mill is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, at Newlin Mill.

Organizers said the third annual Race for the Watershed Duck Derby & 5K is being held in partnership with Concord Township to raise money for projects aimed at protecting local waterways.

Events are set to begin at 9 a.m. with a 5K on park trails, preceded by a warmup led by Yoga Six of Glen Mills. A family festival featuring children’s games and activities, local vendors, live music, and a car show is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the rubber duck races in the creek are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Organizers said runners 21 and older will receive a beer from Succession Fermentory at the finish line.

Admission is free for spectators. The 5K entry fee is $35, or $40 for day-of registration. Ducks can be adopted for $20 each or $50 for three, organizers said.

Medals will be awarded to the top three 5K finishers, and age-group winners will receive gift cards from local businesses. Duck race winners will receive cash prizes of up to $100 per heat, with a championship prize of up to $1,000.

Registration for the 5K and duck adoptions are available online through RunSignup and the Newlin Grist Mill website, organizers said.

Organizers said the event is sponsored by Opdenaker Trash & Recycling Services, with additional support from Agilent Technologies, Brinker Simpson, Encompass Health, Mathnasium, Pennoni, Propell Credit Union, Sun East Foundation, Team Toyota, Visit Delco and Wild Birds Unlimited of Glen Mills.

Police Log April 29: Theft, fraud, DUI

LensCrafters on Route 202 in Concord Township was robbed on April 9. Police said more than $3,000 worth of sunglasses were taken. The only suspect is an unidentified white male.

A 63-year-old Chadds Ford man is the reported victim of theft by fraud, according to state police. The report said an unknown person illegally paid for various hotel and restaurant bills using the debit card numbers of the victim in Baltimore, Md., causing a total loss of approximately $1619.61.

State police are investigating a case of fraud by deception in which a 26-year-old Drexel Hill woman was bilked out of $3,600. According to the police report, troopers were alerted to a telephone scam where the victim had been contacted by someone claiming to work for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. The impersonator informed the victim that she needed to make payments due to her having a warrant. The victim paid approximately $3,600 through ECASH accounts. The incident took place on April 2.

Avondale Barracks

Police said Elizabeth L. Stanaitis, 62, of Downingtown, and Myshel Castillo-Avalos, 30, of Kennett Square, were each cited following a two-car crash on Red Lion Road north of Marlboro Road in Pocopson Township on April 17. Castillo-Avalos was injured and transported to Chester County Hospital. Stanaitis was also believed to have been injured, but she refused transport. According to police, Stanaitis was driving north on Red Lion, and Castillo-Avalos was southbound on Red Lion. The cars collided at the crest of a hill in the center of the roadway.

Kennett Square Police Department

On April 22, 2026, an arrest warrant was issued for Roman Nochebuena-Urcid after he failed to appear for his preliminary hearing. Nochebuena-Urcid, 27, of Hockessin, was arrested and charged with DUI after police received a call of an erratic driver believed to be intoxicated. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the red Toyota in the 400 Block of E. Maple Street on March 12, and upon making contact with Nochebuena-Urcid, a strong odor of alcoholic beverage was detected. Field sobriety tests showed impairment, police said. He was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and submitted to a chemical test of his breath, resulting in a 0.153 percent blood alcohol level.

Borough police said Robert Inskip, 36, of Kennett Square, was arrested and charged with DUI and related traffic offenses after the 2012 Honda SUV he was operating was stopped for swerving over the lane lines and into park lanes, as well as frequently braking when not necessary. The incident occurred on April 3, at approximately 6:47 p.m., beginning at the intersection of W. Cypress Street and S. Union Street and continuing until a traffic stop was conducted at the intersection of James Walter Way and S. Union Street. Upon making contact with Inskip, police said they observed indicators suggesting intoxication, and field sobriety tests showed impairment. He was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and submitted to a chemical test of his blood. On April 23, medical records were received showing a blood alcohol level of 0.274 percent.
