Mega pet adoption planned

Mega pet adoption planned

More than 1,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be available for adoption later this month when Brandywine Valley SPCA holds its Summer Mega Adoption Event at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware. The two-day event is scheduled for June 20-21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with adoption fees set at $35.

Organizers said the event, supported by Best Friends Animal Society, is expected to be the largest adoption event in the country. All animals available for adoption will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. A limited number of early-access Fast Passes will be sold for entry one hour before general admission on Saturday.

“Our Megas are such inspiring events, providing a lifeline to so many pets who have lost everything,” BVSPCA CEO Adam Lamb said. “As the largest adoption event in the country, our goal with the size and format is to save even more lives by reaching folks who might not otherwise consider coming to a shelter to adopt.”

Aurora Velazquez, East regional director for Best Friends Animal Society, said the organization was proud to support the event and its impact on pets and the surrounding community.

Lamb said the adoption event also is intended to help shelters in the region and in other parts of the country where more animals need homes than there are adopters. “Every adoption equals two lives saved, as it opens a space for another animal in need,” he said.

Participating organizations include Animal Adoption Center, Best Friends Animal Society, Crossing Paths Animal Rescue, Currituck County, Faithful Friends Animal Society, Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center, Humane Society of Harrisburg Area and McKamey Animal Center.

People planning to adopt are encouraged to bring a leash and collar for dogs, a carrier for cats, a valid ID and a credit card for the adoption fee. Cardboard cat carriers and dog supplies also will be available for purchase or pickup onsite.

This year’s event will be BVSPCA’s 22nd Mega Adoption Event. The organization says its Mega Adoption Events have helped more than 22,000 pets find homes over the past decade.

Organizers also are seeking volunteers for roles ranging from setup and teardown to assisting visitors during the event. Families, community groups and corporate teams are invited to sign up.

The event also is supported by Fetch Pet Insurance and Petco Love.

Additional details on the event, volunteer opportunities and Fast Passes are available on the organizer’s website.
