The First ladies of Rock and Soul return to Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Oct. 15

Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center presents the First Ladies of Rock & Soul at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15. On stage with a 13-piece band, the group will perform tunes made famous by the Supremes, Ronettes, Shirelles, Chiffons, Mary Wells and more. The Chadds Ford Area Women's Club's next meeting will feature musician Jerry O'Rourke, playing Scottish music at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 10, at Painter’s Folly in Chadds Ford. Learn to keep pets safe from garden toxins.

Mt. Cuba Center is offering an online gardening class with household pets in mind. The class is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 6-7:30 p.m. and costs $19. Many backyard plants are listed as “toxic” to cats and dogs, but toxicity can range from simple stomach irritation to life-threatening illness. Learn how to identify the most common garden plant offenders and which ones cause real concern in this talk. Basic at-home care will be discussed, as well as when and how to seek appropriate emergency veterinary care for potentially toxic plant exposure. Register here.

Learn about witchcraft in Pennsylvania from the Chester County History center on Oct. 4.

There was witchery afoot in Pennsylvania. Folklorist Thomas White traces the history and lore of witchcraft and the occult in a virtual talk, Witches of Pennsylvania: Occult History and Lore, that quietly lives on in Pennsylvania even today. The talk is through the Chester County History Center at 7 p.m. on Oct. 4. Go here for more information or to register.

The Brandywine Battlefield Park will hold their Patriots Day event at Brandywine Battlefield Park scheduled on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn what life was like for soldiers and camp followers during the Revolutionary War from period reenactors.  Military drills and firing demonstrations will be conducted at various times.  Colonial trades and cooking will also be demonstrated, and tours will be given of the Ring and Gilpin houses. Admission is $12 for adults; $10 for Seniors, AAA, AARP; and $8 for youth (ages 3-11).

They’ll take almost anything with a plug on Chadds Ford Townships Recycling Day scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to noon, behind the township building. Items not eligible for recycling are smoke detectors and large appliances. There’s a cost of $30 for a TV or computer monitor, $10 for a microwave, air conditioner, dehumidifier, and dorm refrigerators, and $100 for a console or projection TV.

Delaware County Symphony presents Strings and Winds with Piano Chamber Concert under the direction of the Delaware County Symphony’s new Chamber Series Director Kristine Strecker. It’s the first chamber concert of the season and features two pieces, a piano quintet with strings and a piano sextet with winds. Strings and Winds with Piano will be on Oct. 2 at 3 p.m. in Neumann University's Meagher Theatre. Tickets for the concert may be purchased at dcsmusic.org/tickets.
