Alexander “Alex” S. Diamond of Concord Township

Alexander “Alex” S. Diamond, 77, of Concord Township, died Feb. 9, at Naamans Creek Country Manor. Born to Samuel and Estelle Schultz Diamond in Upland, he has been a longtime resident of Concord Township. He worked in protective services for the Franklin Mint for 31 years retiring in 2004. Alex served as an active firefighter and EMT for the Concordville Fire Co., even serving as the deputy chief at one time. Alex also served in the Delaware National Guard from 1963-1969. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 32 years, Dorothy A. Klein who died in February of 2019, and a brother, Richard Diamond. He is survived by his sister, Geraldine Gibson. Graveside services will be held privately at Elam United Methodist Church Cemetery. Roadwork for July 18 to July 24

PennDOT has announced the following road projects, which are weather-dependent and could affect drivers in the greater Chadds Ford area during the week of Roadwork for July 18 to July 24. Motorists are urged to allow extra time if they are traveling through one of the construction zones. Work schedules are subject to change.

Chadds Ford Township’s 2020 Road Program includes repaving Heyburn Road from Ridge Road to a point between Hilloch and Keepsake. There will also be paving and adjusting the grade at Coopershawk Lane where it intersects Ridge Road to fix failed paving and drainage issues. Additionally, Pheasant Lane and Grouse Trail will also be repaved.

PECO is planning daytime, single lane closures on Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) between Starr Road and Sunny Dell Road in New Garden Township, from Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31.

Utility installation will cause daytime lane closures on Baltimore Pike in Pennsbury Township, between Fairville Road and Joshua Way, from July 27 through Aug. 31.

Road work will cause lane closures on Baltimore Pike between Cope Road and S. Walnut Street in Kennett Township from July 20 through Aug. 4.

PECO Energy is planning weekday lane closures on Route 1, at Old Baltimore Pike in Pennsbury Township, through Friday, July 24, for utility construction.

Construction on a project to rehabilitate the bridge carrying Kaolin Road over the west branch of Red Clay Creek in Kennett Township is scheduled to last through mid-February. Kaolin Road will be closed and detoured 24/7 between Marshall Bridge Road and Round Hill and Kaolin Road motorists will be directed to use Route 41 North, Route 1 North, and Route 82 (Union Street) Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.

Bridge replacement will close State Street in Kennett Square between Mill Road and Penns Manor Drive through Aug. 28.

The Concord Road bridge over Green Creek will be closed and detoured between Valentine Drive and Foulk Road in Concord Township. Work is expected to be completed in early February 2021. During the closure, Concord Road motorists will be detoured over Valley Brook Road and SmithBridge Road. Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.

Lane restrictions on the Conchester Highway between Routes 1 and Clayton Park Drive continue for reconstruction and widening.

Academic Achievement July 24

Morgan Nadin, of Chadds Ford, was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in communication design, summa cum laude from Kutztown University. The cumulative grade point average necessary for the highest honor (summa cum laude) is 3.80.

Widener University conferred more than 1,100 undergraduate degrees this year. Among them were eight degree-recipients from the Chadds Ford area. Those graduates are:

Kirsten Ryan, who graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English;
Eric Hahn, who graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering;
Emily Kent graduated with a Bachelor of Science in hospitality management;
Jordan Lynch graduated with a Bachelor of Science in nursing;
Sarah Wydila graduated with a Bachelor of Science in nursing ;
Miranda Lynam graduated with a Bachelor of Science in nursing:
William Hurst graduated with a Management/Law ;
JoAnn Kleschick graduated with an LEI paralegal associate degree.
