The annual Polar Plunge to benefit the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 10 at the Brandywine Picnic Park.

• Unionville baseball used equipment donations are now being accepted and a special drop off event has been arranged to make donating even easier.  For the next two Saturdays, Jan. 20 and 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the school will be accepting donations outside of the UHS Gym entrance, the side entrance of school- gymnasium entrance. All sporting goods and recreation equipment in working condition will be accepted. As a reminder, the actual sale will take place Feb. 24 at UHS.

• St. Thomas the Apostle will hold an open house at its school 12:30– 2 p.m. on Jan. 28. Visitors can see the classrooms and meet the teachers and learn about their comprehensive curriculum and tour the facilities. Parents, siblings and friends are welcome. For information go here.

Historic Sugartown will offer Cabin Fever Saturday on Feb. 3.

• Play the way kids did during the 1700s & 1800s. On Saturday, Feb. 3, Historic Sugartown will offer Cabin Fever Saturday, a fun-filled family event at Sugartown’s Carriage Museum from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. There will a variety of kid-friendly crafts, old-fashioned games and demonstrations by Historic Sugartown, Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation, Wharton Esherick Museum, Paoli Battlefield, and East Goshen. Historic Sugartown’s c. 1880 General Store will also be open for tours. Complimentary coffee & hot cocoa. Locate our visitor parking by GPS by entering 273 Boot Road, Malvern, PA 19355. Admission is $6 per person, but children ages 2 and younger are admitted free.

• The Chadds Ford Historical Society hosts its 10th annual plein air art event, Paint Out Chadds Ford. Between Feb. 1 and 3, artists from the Mid-Atlantic region will be painting around the Chadds Ford area as well as at the Barns Brinton House, John Chads House and along Brandywine Creek. Their work will go on exhibition on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the artists' reception and wet painting sale at the Barn Visitors Center. All work will be available for immediate purchase. Tickets are $15 for non-members/$10 CFHS members. Tickets are available here.  Light refreshments will be served.  A portion of the sale of each painting supports the work of the Chadds Ford Historical Society. The art will remain on exhibit and available for purchase through March 2.

• Get ready to shiver. It’s the annual Polar Plunge to benefit the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 10 at Brandywine Picnic Park. Experience the Brandywine Creek in a whole new way. Online registration is now closed but people may still register at the event. Those interested in taking the plunge are asked to visit http://www.brandywineredclay.org/event/polar-plunge-2018/ to read the FAQ. Participation requires a $35 donation or $25 with a student ID.

Students at Hilledale Elementary School prepare lunches for needy organizations on the MLK Day of Service.

• Students in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District took part in the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service on Monday. As is part of the tradition, Hillendale Elementary School students and their families made lunches for Safe Harbor in West Chester and for His Mission in Kennett Square. Students at Chadds Ford Elementary collected canned goods and packaged foods for the emergency food pantry at Mitchell Elementary in Philadelphia, while Pocopson students took part in a meal packaging event with the organization Rise Against Hunger. At Unionville Elementary, it was "Blankets for Buddies" for children suffering from long-term illnesses at A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital in Delaware. Middle school students at CF Patton collected needed items for the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County and for Family Promise of Southern Chester County. Unionville High School students assisted a daycare with organization and upgrades and planned a prom at a local nursing home.

• Longwood Fire Co. promoted Mike Wells from Captain to assistant fire chief during the organization’s annual reorganizational meeting. Also promoted was Firefighter Bas Devise who was named fire lieutenant. The remaining line officers remain the same. Longwood Fire Company has served the communities of Kennett, East Marlborough, Pennsbury and Pocopson townships since 1921.
