Mixed Media: Winter exhibitions

August Cut by John Suplee on exhibit at Church Street Gallery

I’d like to start off by congratulating anyone who braved the Siberian temperatures last weekend to partake in First Friday activities on their fortitude. I want you on my team if we ever have to adapt to a post-apocalyptic Hunger Games-esque living situation.

Now that we’re back to a balmy just-above-freezing temperature, we can resume activity as usual. In Kennett, Mala Galleria opened for First Friday, with their animal-centric exhibition, “All Creatures Great and Small” reminiscent of James Herriot. This exhibition marks the first for new owner and artist in her own right, Corien Siepelinga. It was with heavy hearts that Mala, and the Kennett art community said goodbye to Mala founder Stella Scott who has relocated to Georgia. Pop in and say hello to Corien and enjoy the exhibition which runs through January 28th.

There are a few winter exhibition openings this Friday. Starting with Main Line Art Center, which hosts their Professional Artists Member Exhibition reception this Friday, January 12th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. These artists all participate in the Professional Artist Membership program. The program assists artists in the Philadelphia region with career development through classes, exhibitions, networking opportunities, and a discounted web presence. This show has been curated by Pamela A. Regan, Owner of Bluestone Fine Art Gallery. The Professional Artist Member Exhibition runs through February 15th.

P603 by Robert Straight on exhibit at The Delaware Contemporary

Also opening on January 12th, The Delaware Contemporary hosts Robert Straight in “Trifecta”. The reception will be held on Friday, January 12th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The title of this show is an homage to the three different styles Straight has employed: three-dimensional sculptures, constructed structures, and two-dimensional paintings.

These pieces, whether three-dimensional or two-dimensional, create a fluid composition that seems to fold up or unfold, depending on how you see it, within themselves. Like pouring brownie batter from the bowl to the tray, Straights’ gooey patterns cascade gently over one another. Straight attributes his style to an interest in geometry, fractals, and string theory which is identifiable some of his pieces which resemble colorful bacteria you may find under a microscope. The titles of some of his pieces even incorporate the sterile, the scientific, such as the piece included in this article, “p603”. Straight received his MFA from Cranbrook. He has exhibited along the east coast including New York, New Hampshire and Philadelphia and is currently associated with the Schmidt/Dean Gallery in Philadelphia.

Closing this week is John Suplee’s show at Church Street Gallery, “Perils and Pleasures of Modern Life” on view until January 13th. This body of work features florals, rural landscapes and industrial scenes, all executed in a post-impressionistic style which radiates with warm tones and gentle strokes. Personally, I could stare at the summer field scenes all day and soak up the golden hues for nutritional value during these grey winter days. Sometimes, I use art as my own personal light box in an attempt to combat that pesky seasonal depression. These paintings do the trick!

Station Gallery in Greenville, DE is hosting their Winter Group Show until January 27th. There is no reception for this months’ exhibition, so be sure to stop by and check it out at your leisure. Finally, The Palette and The Page hosts their second annual Emerging Artists exhibition featuring Callie Dowe, Jen Katzmire, Laura May Maloney, Juli Matsen, and Lauren Permenter.

Don’t forget to turn into Art Watch Radio on WCHE 1520AM every Wednesday from 1 to 1:30 p.m. This week, Lele Galer hosts abstract artist Su Horty and motivational writer Sarah Brown as they discuss developing as an artist midlife.

School board passes proposed preliminary budget

During a six-minute long meeting in which only one member attended in person, the Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board directors passed a proposed preliminary budget for the 2018-2019 academic year.

The board held the meeting at 8 a.m. today in the district office. Board President Jeff Hellrung was the only director in the room. All other directors participated by phone. Hellrung said the early Wednesday morning meeting was held because of inclement weather Monday night, Jan. 8.

As passed by a 9-0 vote, the budget is for $87.9 million.

Superintendent of Schools John Sanville called the proposal “an estimate budget,” because the district doesn’t yet know how much money it will be getting from the state. He said the governor’s proposed budget wouldn’t be announced until March.

“What we’ve done,” Sanville said, “is put together a budget that leaves all options open to us…allowing maximum flexibility.”

The budget will be adjusted during the next few months once the directors have a better idea of anticipated revenues and expenses. A final budget will be voted on in June.
