Mary E. Owens Roark of West Grove

Mary E. Owens Roark, 93, of West Grove, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 2, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Ferry Roark, who died in 1974, and with whom she shared seven years of marriage. Her first husband, John Owens, with whom she shared 30 years of marriage, died in 1966.

Born in Ashe County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Matry Mitchum Latham.

She was a housekeeper at Chatham Acres Nursing Home for many years.

Mary was a member of the Kennett Square Missionary Baptist Church.

She enjoyed gardening and being with her family and friends.

The family would like to thank April for the special care given to Mary.

Mary is survived by four daughters,  Kathryn Bolden of Clear Spring, Md., Hazel Owens of New London, Peggy Parsons of Stevens, Pa. and Jeanne Nantais of Newark; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, John Owens; one sister, Pearl Eades, and three brothers, Gene Latham, William Breeding and Elmer Breeding.

You are invited to visit with her family and friends from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Foulk & Grieco Funeral Home, 200 Rose Hill Road, West Grove. Her Funeral service will follow at noon. Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery, Route 82 in Kennett Square.

Roadwork for Feb. 4 to Feb. 10

PennDOT has announced the following road projects, which are weather-dependent and could affect residents in the greater Chadds Ford area during the week of Feb. 4 through Feb. 10. Motorists are urged to allow extra time if they are traveling through one of the construction zones.

• Soil boring will cause lane closures on Route 1 between Brinton Lake Road and State Farm Drive in Concord Township between Feb. 6 and 10.

• Sign signal and line painting will cause lane restrictions on Pocopson Road at Route 52 during the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Feb. 6 through Freb. 10.

• Utility installation will cause lane closures on Route 1 in Pennsbury Township between Elmwood Drive and Bowman Alley from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the week of Feb. 7-14.

• There will be lane closures on Penn Green Road between Cooper and Starr roads in New Garden Township through Feb. 6. PECO is doing utility work.

• Green Valley Road, between Powell and Brandywine Creek roads, in Newlin Township, remains closed for bridge repair. Detours are posted.

Kenneth C. Conrad of Chadds Ford

Kenneth C. Conrad, 81, of Chadds Ford, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, at his home.

He was the husband of Beverly A. Conrad, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.

Born in Folsom, he was the son of the late Joseph D. Sr. and M. Elizabeth Conrad.

He worked as an engineer with Westinghouse Electric.

In addition to his wife, Ken is survived by his children, Lynne Miller (Scott) of Union, Mo., and Ross Conrad (Kathleen) of Landenberg; grandchildren, Elizabeth Miller, Jessica Holderby, Matthew Conrad and Jacob Conrad; and a brother, J. David Conrad (Nancy) of Orlando, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Meadowcroft Presbyterian Church, 1255 Westtown Road, West Chester, PA 19382.

Burial will be private in Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Ken’s name to Mission to the World, Attn: the Ministry of Michael Oh, P.O. Box 2589, Suwanee, GA  30024-0982.

DCCC and Academy of Fine Arts to offer seamless transfer

Delaware County Community College and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts have signed an articulation agreement that will enable qualified students to transfer seamlessly from the community college into the four-year art school located in Center City Philadelphia.

Students who maintain at least a “C” average in each course and who graduate from Delaware County Community College’s Studio Arts program with an associate in fine arts degree are eligible to transfer up to 63 credits in fine arts and/or liberal arts to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Students are eligible to transfer into the school’s bachelor of fine arts program.

Qualified students will be required to submit a portfolio representative of their work. The portfolio serves as a visual transcript that helps Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts faculty determine the student’s skill level. The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts has agreed to waive its application fee. Scholarships for students attending full-time are available for students who maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts bachelor of fine arts program pairs demanding studio training with fine-arts focused liberal arts education.
