New agreement for Kennett disc golf

Disc golf at Anson B. Nixon Park. (Courtesy image)

The Kennett Area Park Authority announced that Chester County Disc Golf will assume responsibility in collaboration with KAPA and its staff to maintain and promote events for the disc golf course located in Anson B. Nixon Park. CCDG club is a registered organization in the state, with a mission to help grow the sport of disc golf through community outreach, course development, fundraising, membership in the club, and more, a press release said.

According to UDisc.com, disc golf is one of the fastest-growing sports in the US today – right up there with pickleball. In 2023, the US became the first country to surpass 10,000 courses. Worldwide there are more than 15,000 courses which is roughly double the number of courses that existed in 2017.

Locally, the disc golf course in Anson B. Nixon Park is highly rated and was considered to be one of the best courses in the area, according to the release. Extreme storms and the emerald ash boring beetle have taken a toll on course conditions.

KAPA’s board member Eric Gaver, who focuses on athletic facilities in the park has said of the new agreement with CCDG, “We’ve expanded our vision for disc golf in Anson Nixon Park to grow the sport in our diverse community, promote broader collaboration with other local clubs and to elevate course conditions for competitive events. The entire board and staff of KAPA believe that Chester County Disc Golf is a terrific match to help us achieve those objectives.”

Dan Wilson, president of the board for CCDG shares the enthusiasm. “We’re excited to work together with KAPA to improve the course for public benefit, promoting special events in Anson B. Nixon Park, and providing a more inclusive venue for all disc golf enthusiasts, both novices and experienced golfers.”

Chadds Ford in brief

Chadds Ford Township supervisors Wednesday night held a brief hearing for, then voted in favor of an updated stormwater management plan. Ordinance 175 repeals and replaces the current ordinance.

Township solicitor Mike Maddren said the updated ordinance changes several definitions used in the earlier ordinance, and engineer Mike Schneider said it provides for several waivers and exemptions.

The board also voted to advertise for the 2024 Road Program. Roads scheduled for work this year are Summit Drive, Longview Road, Oakland Road, Southview Path, and Woodland Drive.

Supervisors approved a request from Calvary Chapel for several outdoor worship events from May through July. Eric Gartner, a Harvey Lane resident had been critical of events at Calvary in the past because of noise and trespass issues but said during the May 1 meeting that he supports Calvary’s request because the church has been successful in stopping those violations.

Some upgrades are coming to the township’s municipal building. Supervisors voted to spend up to $7,773 to replace the air conditioning unit at Turner’s Mill, and township Manager Lacey Faber said the audio-visual upgrade in the meeting room will be complete within a few days. It should be finished on Monday, May 6. The upgrade is planned to improve the sound quality for people who watch a meeting on Zoom and for those attending in person. J. L. Entertainment of Exton will do the work for $21,000.

Supervisors are expected to vote during their May 29 workshop on whether to allow Willowdale Holistic Center in Olde Ridge Village to have a massage therapist.
