Another storm, another flood

Don’t try to drive through standing water. These cars got stranded on Route 1 just west of the intersection with Creek Road.

For the second time in less than a month, rains caused the Brandywine Creek to spill its banks along Route 1 in Chadds Ford early Wednesday morning. Four cars became stranded in the flooded roadway.

Heavy winds knocked out power in parts of Chester and Delaware counties between 7 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, but the creek didn’t flood the roadway until a little before 5 a.m. on Wednesday. But, at that time, the northbound lanes were just wet and easily passable. That changed by about 7 a.m.

Winds also knocked down utility wires, trees and tree branches. Atwater Road in Chadds Ford Township had to be closed until crews cleared the debris.

Work crews clear a down tree and wires from Atwater Road.
