Township appealing assessments

Chadds Ford Township is looking to pick up some extra cash by appealing a Delaware County tax assessment on four business properties. Two of the properties are located on Oakland Road, another is on Route 202 and the fourth is on Brintons Bridge Road.

Between June 8, 2021, and Dec. 8, 2022, the four properties sold for a combined $ 10,642,000, but their assessment was just $1,657,740. If the appeal goes through, the proposed assessment will jump to $7,747,376.

That would mean the tax revenue generated for Chadds Ford from all four properties would go from $872 to $4,077 based on the milage rate of 0.5262.

The Unionville-Chadds Ford School District could also reap more money if the appeal succeeds. The district taxed the properties at $26,491, but the proposed assessment would bring that to $123,803. However, township solicitor Mike Maddren said the district is reluctant to get involved in the appeal.

Supervisors voted 2-0 during their July 26 meeting to retain the services of resident Don Weiss, a tax attorney, to file the appeal.

Other business

Supervisors approved a special event permit for the Brandywine Conservancy to hold its Bike the Brandywine event on Saturday, Sept. 23.

The board also approved spending up to $1,000 for a Pumpkin Paint & Carve event for youngsters at the pavilion in the playground behind the municipal building. That is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14.

Supervisors will not have a meeting on Aug. 2. The next meeting meetings for the Board of Supervisors include a joint supervisors’ and Planning Commission meeting on Aug. 9 at 5 p.m., and a workshop at 6:30 p.m. on Aug.  30.
