Kennett Twp. gets open space funds

North Coventry Township is also getting money for an adaptive kayak launch and boat ramp rehabilitation project at Riverside Park. A total of 15 municipalities are sharing $2.5 million in open space funding.

Kennett Township is one of 15 townships, municipalities, and organizations getting extra open space funding from Chester County.

According to a press release, Kennett will get $250,000 to acquire a 23.7-acre wooded property to connect to its 170-acre publicly accessible nature preserve and with trail corridors on two adjacent properties. This will create a trail of more than 10 miles.

The funds come from Chester County commissioners awarding a total of $2.5 million in open space preservation and park improvement grants, made available through Chester County’s Preservation Partnership Program. The program offers funding to municipalities and non-profit land preservation organizations. This commitment of county funds will help leverage an additional $15 million of non-county funds.

“One of the key reasons we continue to attract so many people to live, work, and visit here is the commitment we make to protecting our land and providing superior recreational opportunities for families to enjoy,” the commissioners said in a press release. “We are fortunate to have the ability to devote dollars in this way.”

East Bradford Township will also get $250,000 to construct the first phase of the Plum Run Trail on a portion of the township-owned 48-acre Plum Run Preserve, and will include a 1,300 linear foot, 8-foot wide universally accessible multi-use asphalt trail; an 11-car public parking lot; and a 2,520 square foot outdoor heritage center/trailhead at the western terminus of the trail located adjacent to the historic Strode’s Barn.

A total of 15 grants are included, ranging from $41,000 to North Coventry Township for an adaptive kayak launch and boat ramp rehabilitation project at Riverside Park, to $500,000 to Willistown Conservation Trust to help fund a 90-acre preserve in Willistown Township.

The accident happened at 5:12 p.m. at the intersection of Street and Lenape roads. According to the police report, Bird was driving west on Street Road (Route 926) when she made an “improper left without clearance,” turning onto Lenape as a second vehicle was eastbound on 926. The accident happened at 7:16 a.m. The report said both drivers attempted to cross through the intersection and struck one another. Surveillance indicated that the second car arrived at their respective stop sign just before Krautheim’s and had the right-of-way. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no injuries were reported.

A 70-year-old man on a motorcycle was charged with DUI after his bike struck a guardrail on Springdell Road in West Marlborough Township on May 12. The biker, not identified in the report, was transported to Paoli Hospital for medical evaluation. The accident happened at 7:59 p.m.

According to the report, officers observed Pina-Torres to be visibly intoxicated and he originally claimed he had been living at the residence for the previous three days, but residents there disputed his claim, saying he never lived there nor was he given permission to live there. Police were also told that he was previously attempting to gain entry through the front door before opening a first-floor window and climbing through, after being told he was not allowed inside the home.
