Chadds Ford in brief

Chadds Ford Township Board of Supervisors Wednesday night made relatively quick work of a light agenda for the July 6 meeting.

Vice-Chair Noelle Barbone and Supervisor Frank Murphy voted to adopt an ordinance that repealed a previous zoning change. Supervisors’ Chair Samantha Reiner was not in attendance. The new ordinance rezoned three PBC-1 areas along Route 202 back to PBC.

That vote followed a hearing that consisted of little more than solicitor Mike Maddren stating the intent of the new ordinance. He added that the result would be that no car dealerships or service centers in those parcels. Neither supervisor made any comment, nor did any of the four residents in the audience.

Barbone and Murphy also voted to retain the services of an appraiser to look at the property at 1631 Baltimore, the All State office at the corner of Route 1 and Creek Road across from Hank’s Place. The property owner has not entered into a trail agreement and the township wants a trail easement as part of the Walkable Chadds Ford plan. The appraisal will cost the township 1,500.

The board appointed Sarah Sharp to the township’s Open Space Committee.

Fun Dip, a bulldog/boxer mix, struts her stuff in a lovely pale blue tutu during last year’s parade.

• Dress your pet in their patriotic flare and join Concord Township for the annual Patriotic Pet Parade on Thursday, July 14 at the Smithbridge Road dog park at 6 p.m. Small dogs will parade in their fenced-in area and large dogs will parade in their fenced-in area. Animals other than dogs will parade in the grassy area outside the fenced dog areas. There will be local pet businesses with giveaways, crafts for kids, patriotic music, and patriotic people leading the parades. The Concert in the Park will follow at 7 p.m., featuring Big Fire.

• There have been spies in Chester County since the 1600s, but how many people know that George Washington’s own spy ring was once headquartered in ChesCo? Visitors to the Chester County History Center can learn all about that on Spy Day, Saturday, July 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This new, family event will give children the chance to conduct spy missions through the museum, learn to read and write in cipher and code, explore the science of invisible ink and develop their own secret identities. They’ll also learn about real spies who operated in the area during the 18th century and beyond. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for children 6+ (free for members with code.) Go here to register.

• Alumni of the Criterions Jazz Ensemble, out of West Chester University’s Wells School of Music, will take the stage for a free jazz concert on Thursday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m., in the Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall, Philips Memorial Building, 700 S. High Street, West Chester. The concert will also be available via livestream at www.vimeo.com/wsom.

• The JFK assassination remains a highly debated and controversial moment in U.S. history, even after almost 59 years. Those interested in what happened on Nov. 23, 1963, can delve deeper or at least reconnect with that moment at the Rachel Kohl Library from 1-2 p.m. The Kennedy Murder Case with Roger Arthur will take place in the library’s community room. Arther will take visitors through the events of the day, the immediate aftermath, and the people involved in those events.

Susan Wortec, of the Chadds Ford Township Residents’ Association, accepts flags for retirement from Stephanie Jacobson. When and where the retirement ceremony will take place had not yet been determined when the flags were collected on July 4th.
