Arrest made in 1981 murder

Pennsylvania State Police from the Media Barracks made an arrest in a 41-year-old cold-case murder in Delaware County. In a press release, police said they charged Wayne Walker with criminal homicide, murder of the first-, second-, and third-degree, kidnapping, and conspiracy in connection with the murder of Denise Marie Pierson of Marcus Hook.

Suspect Wayne Walker
The victim, Denise Pierson.

In addition to Walker, Peter Horne, formerly of Marcus Hook, was identified as a co-conspirator, but he is dead and can’t be charged. The press release said that two other suspects, not publicly identified, are also under investigation. There is a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of additional suspects. Anyone with information should contact Trooper First Class Andrew J. Martin, Criminal Investigation Assessment Unit, Pennsylvania State Police, Troop K, Philadelphia, at 215-452-5216.

“For 40 long years, the family of Denise Pierson has sought answers in connection with the death of their loved one. We hope that today’s announcement brings a measure of healing and closure that they’ve been denied for too long,” said District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer.

Pierson was 18 at the time of her disappearance on April 14, 1981. She failed to return home from a friend’s house. Her remains were found near the railroad tracks located at 7th Street and Market Street in Marcus Hook — about 300 yards from Horne’s home — in July of 1984. An autopsy performed in 1984 revealed Pearson’s death was due to blunt impact injuries.

Several months before the body was found, in January of 1984, the Crisis Intervention Center at Crozer-Chester Hospital received a call from an unidentified caller who said that he had killed Denise Pierson. The call was traced to Horne’s home in Marcus Hook.

Suspect Peter Horne, deceased.

The investigation eventually led to Walker. The press release said that in 1994, a former cellmate of Walker’s said Walker confided in him that he had been at a party at Horne’s home with Pearson and two other people, the unidentified two other suspects.

According to the press release, “[T]hey played a game called ‘spin the stick.’ During the game, the victim charged for the door in an attempt to flee the residence. Defendant Walker stated that Horne then hit the victim with a stick, and she started to bleed. Suspect 2 provided Horne with a clothesline used to tie up the victim. Horne then placed the victim in green trash bags. Horne, Suspect 1, and Suspect 2 carried the victim to a wheelbarrow on the patio,” and all four, including Walker, took her body to the tracks.

Walker is currently incarcerated at George W. Hill Correctional Facility on unrelated assault charges.

Boost Your Business: Cold calling

Ignore every stigma you’ve ever heard about cold calling. A lot of entrepreneurs and salespeople believe that it is no longer an efficient form of marketing. But then again, many entrepreneurs started their business using cold calling and still believe in its effectiveness.

Basic tips for your cold calling efforts: Start with your target industry. Public annual reports, business organization lists, and press releases are a great place to find prospects to add to your calling list. Also, depending upon your industry, you may need to delve further into research, but it will be worth it when you have a successful list.*

Call outside normal hours. Do not call several times a day; that’s annoying. Instead, call early in the morning, during lunchtime, or after work.

If the person that answered the phone isn’t the one you want, act like that person is the one you’re trying to reach. Modify your strategy. And, if they direct you to the correct person, thank them.

Add the phrase “Can you help me?” and many people will!

First off, try not to sound like a salesperson. You’ll have 10 seconds to catch their attention. Don’t waste it making it all about you. Say “Hi (name), my name is (your name). I’m hoping you can help me. If I wanted to provide (your product or service) to your company, who would I need to impress to get that business?” Remember, if you sound like a salesperson, you’re guaranteed to get a dial tone.

What about rejection? You cannot take it personally. You need to be immune to rejection.

How do you get good clients? In the beginning, it is quantity first because it is impossible to know which of them will be “good.” And what is your definition of a good client? Many believe it is the size of the client or the amount of money you make. Or it could be the loyalty of the client – knowing that they will stay with you and that turns into long-term income.

Some of the best clients could come from jobs that some might consider the worst. And some of the worst clients may come from projects that you consider to be the best. So, it is hard to determine who is going to be that “good” client.  There is no way to guess.

Think about how many appointments you need to make to close one account and figure the time you need to make that many calls. Then make sure to carve out that amount of time in your day. A few calls a couple of times a week could make all the difference.
