Marijuana growing ordinance tabled

Chadds Ford Township Planning Commission members tabled their continued discussion on the proposed medical marijuana growing/processing ordinance until July. The group felt more research was needed, specifically regarding how those businesses operate and how much space they would need.

Commission Chairman Craig Huffman said during the June 9 meeting that from what he’s read, such facilities are large.

“I did my homework and research on what these things look like… There are different types, and they operate differently but, one thing that’s very clear to me is that it’s a large industrial operation, basically like an airplane hangar meets a commercial greenhouse.”

Township and Planning Commission solicitor Mike Maddren was to have received information on a proposed growing/processing facility in Trainer Township. However, Maddren said that needs to wait until a new solicitor in Trainer gets up to speed on the proposal.

However, the commission has decided that the ordinance should restrict the grow facilities to the PBC-1 Zoning District and that the facilities must be no closer than 1,000 feet to any type of school, daycare center, playground, or house of worship, and no closer than 3,000 feet to another grow facility.

Currently, there are three PBC-1 Zoning District locations. They are the sites for Painters Crossing shopping center, David Dodge, and further north on Route 202, between 202 and Oakland Road near Brintons Bridge Road, where Mercedes Benz will be located.

The commission previously sent a proposed ordinance regulating medical marijuana dispensaries to the supervisors. That proposed ordinance is currently under review by the Delaware County Planning Commission.

Once the county makes its recommendation, the Board of Supervisors will have a hearing on whether to adopt the ordinance.

Municipalities must have in their zoning codes accommodation for all legal businesses in the state.

New leadership for ChesCo Dems

The Chester County Democratic Committee unanimously elected Charlotte Valyo of Schuylkill Township to serve the remaining one-year term as Chester County Democratic Committee Chair. Jerry Pyne of East Whiteland Township will now serve as CCDC Vice-Chair. Theresa Soja of West Bradford won her election as Zone Leader Caucus Chair. All three join the five-member CCDC Executive Board this week.

Valyo and Pyne replace Dick Bingham and Marsha Peltz who announced their retirements in March, effective May 31. Valyo, Pyne, and Soja will each serve one year with a countywide quadrennial Organization Convention set for next summer, in accordance with CCDC’s bylaws, for the next Executive Board term.

Valyo most recently served as Zone Leader Caucus chair, a coalition of the 20 geographic zones that cover every voting precinct in the county. She served on the five-member Executive Board and as the Zone 11 Northern Chester County Zone Leader.

Pyne served as CCDC’s systems administrator and as Zone 13 East Whiteland/Charlestown Dems Zone Leader. Soja was elected as Zone 7 Bradford Dems Zone Leader. All have played a key role in Chester County Democrats’ incredible rise.

Now former Chair Dick Bingham said, “I am extremely proud of our neighbors who took the chance to run for political office, many for the first time. We all care deeply about our community. Politics is a rough business and CCDC is an all-volunteer organization. At the top, we “worked” 52 weeks a year, nights and weekends as our trajectory soared. In my mind, that just became untenable. I am thankful for Charlotte’s commitment to serve out my term and know that we are in excellent hands as we march to victory in November. She has my unwavering support.”
