Police Log May 12: Car theft, scam attempt

State police are investigating a motor vehicle theft that happened on May 6 in Concord Township. An unnamed individual took a 2014 Audi A4 on a test drive and never returned it. No other details were released.

Police said an 82-year-old Concord Township woman avoided being scammed when she refused to pay a bogus request for bail money. According to the report, the woman was contacted by someone claiming to be her grandson, that he was in prison and needed bail money. Another person claiming to be an attorney also called her saying the “grandson” needed bail money. She realized it was a scam and refused to pay.

Avondale Barracks

An 81-year-old-man lost control of his 2010 BMW on the Kennett-Oxford Bypass in East Marlborough Township on May 5. Police identified the driver as Thomas J. Zadnik of West Grove. According to the police report, Zadnik was driving northbound, uphill in the right lane when he struck a guardrail. The car was disabled, but the driver said he wasn’t injured. There was no mention of whether police issued a citation.

Police said they arrested a 39-year-old woman from Wilmington on retail theft charges at the East Marlborough Township Walmart on May 2. No other information was released.

Kennett Square Police Department

Police said Amy Barksdale, 33, of Kennett Square, was charged with forgery and bad checks on April 18, after she cashed a fraudulent $500 check at Carlos Tienda Mexicana. The check was returned for insufficient funds. Investigations determined the check was also a forgery and was not authorized by the account owner. Charges were filed with District Court 15-3-04, and an arrest warrant was issued on May 5.

Deanna Thompson, 53, of Jacksonville, Fla., was arrested on May 7, charged with dealing with proceeds of unlawful activities, theft by unlawful taking or disposition and related charges from June 9, 2020, police said. These charges result from an investigation conducted by Kennett Square Police Criminal Investigation Division involving Thompson breaking into the victim's home, taking numerous items, and selling them at pawn shops. Thompson had also illegally taken more than $10,000 from the victim's bank account. Charges were filed with District Court 15-3-04 and an arrest warrant was issued for Deanna Thompson on December 2, 2020
