Concord buying another 7 acres

Concord Township is buying almost 7 acres at 620 Concord Rad.

Concord Township Council is looking to preserve more land and is eying an almost 7-acre parcel on Concord Road near Cheyney Road. Specifically, council approved a resolution Tuesday night to enter into an agreement of sale for the 6.68-acre parcel at 620 Concord Road.

Council C0-Vice-President John Crossan offered the motion to agree to buy the property between St. Johns Church and the township-owned sewer treatment plant property. The sale price is $750,000 and represents almost 50 acres of preserved open space in that area.

The property has three historic resources. Crossan identified them as the Ralph Pyle House — which dates to the early 1700s — a spring house and a barn.” This area is “a hub of history in the township,” he said.

The money will come from the Sewer Department, and the property “can facilitate any future expansion,” Crossan said.

In reading the resolution, Crossan said the property would be deed-restricted to prevent further residential development and prohibit the demolition of historic recourses.

Council President Dominic Pileggi noted that this was the third or fourth time a property owner has offered a sale of land to the township before offering it to a developer.

“Sometimes this has worked out, and sometimes it hasn’t, but … at least they know they can talk to us first and hopefully we can make something that [makes] both parties happy,” Pileggi said.

Other business

Council awarded the 2021 Road Program contract to A.F. Damon, Inc. CO-Voce-President John Gillespie said the township received five bids for the base and alternate work and that the township engineer recommended Damon.

Damon was the low bidder, and the company has done work for Concord before. The contract is for $701,000, which includes the base and alternate work. The township had budgeted $750,000 for this year’s project.

Council also recognized Girl Scout Kathryn Wright for achieving the Gold Award, announced the retirement of 21-year employee Barbara Buchanan, and awarded four $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors Brandon Gorski, Lucas Torregrossa, Eleri Philips, and Carlie Shiller.
