Concord gets new council member

In a special meeting of Concord Township Council today, members voted to appoint Vinita Deshmukh to fill the vacancy left by Michael Harding. Harding resigned from Council in early December, the second resignation in the fall of 2020. Peter Pagano resigned in October.

In a Facebook statement, the township said, “Township Council is excited to appoint Ms. Deshmukh. They are looking forward to working together to keep our community a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Deshmukh is an auto claims specialist at State Farm Insurance Co. and has lived in the township for more than 14 years. She currently serves as the Garnet Valley High School Home & School vice president.  She has also served as a Medicare counselor for Apprise and is active in the Asian community.

In a separate Facebook statement, Councilmember Dana Rankin said members believe Deshmukh ‘will bring a lot of value to the township.”

Shelley Roberts Jones of West Grove

Shelley Roberts Jones, 83, of West Grove, died Thursday, Jan. 7, at the Jennersville Hospital. She was the loving wife of Donald Raymond Jones, with whom she shared 43 years of marriage.

Born in 1937 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth S. Roberts and the late Grace Chardy Roberts.

At the age of 13, Shelley and her family returned to Pennsylvania moving from West Chester to Kennett Square.

She married Richard W. Taylor in 1957 and eventually settled in Kennett Square and having two children. She was very active in the Kennett Square community and was a member of the United States Tennis Association as a coach and ranked player.

After her divorce in 1978, she moved to Raleigh, N.C. In 1979 she married Donald R. Jones. They lived in Wilmington, and then they moved to Pocopson Township.

In 1994 Don and Shelley moved to Nokomis, Fla. to enjoy the warm climate and be the go-to person for dog watching in the neighborhood. They returned to West Grove, in 2017 residing at Jenner’s Pond..

In addition to her husband Donald, she is survived by her two children, Bryan Taylor and his wife Diana of York, Stacy Botkin of Landenberg, and Don’s three children, Judith (Jones) Harlin and her husband James of Berlin, Md., Cynthia Jones-Taddei and her husband Leonard of Newark, and Douglas Jones and his wife Karen of Milton, Fla., two brothers, Kenneth Roberts of Kennett Square, and Henry “Rique” Roberts of West Chester, 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Sylvia M. Meloni of Glen Mills

Sylvia M. Meloni, 87, of Glen Mills, died Monday, Jan. 11. She was born in the Bronx, N.Y. to Nicholas and Rose Perrucci Serafini. Sylvia lived in Glen Mills, for 20 years, previously living in Thornton, Pa. and Wilmington, Del.

A homemaker, Sylvia volunteered for more than 40 years at the DuPont Children’s Hospital where she received the “Hall of Fame Recognition” award in 2019. Devoted to her Catholic faith, she was a member of St. Cornelius Catholic Church. Sylvia worked part-time for the Century 21 Real Estate Store and also her daughter’s law office in Media.

Sylvia is preceded in death by her husband, Art Meloni who died in 2001, and a sister, Loretta Giuliano. She is survived by her three children, Douglas (Maria) Meloni, Karen (Steven) Sibbers and Kathryn A. Meloni; six grandchildren, Gina (Rob) Kaufman, Michael (Amanda) Meloni, Steven Meloni, and Jessica, Joshua and Sarah Crampsey, and three great-grandchildren, Gianna Kaufman, Alessandra, and Luca Meloni.

A visitation will be held on Thursday evening, 6-8 p.m. at the Pagano Funeral Home, 3711 Foulk Rd., Garnet Valley, and also on Friday at St. Cornelius Catholic Church, 160 Ridge Rd., Chadds Ford, from 11-11:45 a.m., followed by a noon mass.

Interment will remain private. Donations in her memory may be made to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) or the ALS Foundation (www.als.org). Online condolences may be made by visiting www.paganofuneralhome.com.

Police Log Jan. 13: Ethnic intimidation, statutory rape

State police are investigating a Christmas Eve burglary at a Dunkin Donuts on Route 1 in Concord Township. A report said someone unlocked the front door, entered, and stole $450 from a business dropbox.

Police said they arrested Vanessa Thomas, 40, of Louisiana, Mo., at the Sunoco Station at Routes 1 and 202 for ethnic intimidation. According to the report, Thomas was using racial slurs to harass and intimidate customers and staff. The incident happened at 11:35 a.m. on Dec. 27.

Avondale Barracks

A 31-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, both from Collingdale, were arrested on drug possession charges in Pennsbury Township on Jan. 11. State police did not name the pair. According to the police report, the arrests were made in the area of Cossart and Stockford roads at 11:30 p.m. The report also said the odor of marijuana and alcohol were detected. Both suspects were found with marijuana and a field sobriety test indicated the driver was impaired.

State police are investigating the report of statutory rape that happened sometime in 2018. The report lists the victim’s age as 17 years old.

Police said they arrested James Hall, 21, for retail theft. According to the report, Hall left the East Marlborough Township Walmart with a tote full of merchandise without paying. Police said they found him in the back seat of a silver Ford Explorer in the store’s parking lot.

Police arrested a 50-year-old woman from Oxford for retail theft after allegedly stealing 11 items valued at more than $250 worth of merchandise from a business in East Marlborough Township on Dec. 11. Neither the suspect’s name nor that of the business were named in the police report.
