Westtown-East Goshen police responded to the Lukoil at 1209 Wilmington Pike, Thornbury Township on Monday, Jan. 7 at 7:09 p.m. for a reported armed robbery. The owner of the Lukoil reported that he was the sole occupant when one of the suspects entered the small gas station wearing a tan color mask, black hooded sweatshirt, orange t-shirt with a circular print design on the left chest, yellow and brown gloves, khaki pants and blue color athletic shoes with orange soles, Cahill said. No injuries were suffered during the robbery.

When Caln Township police responded today to the reported robbery at the Turkey Hill gas station, a witness told police that the offender left in a dark color Chevy Malibu and this vehicle description was broadcasted to all Chester County law enforcement.

Detectives created a crime alert that was sent to all law enforcement throughout the Delaware Valley and a short time later Detectives received calls from the Delaware State Police Troop 2 and Cecil County, Md. Sheriff’s Office. Soon after it was discovered that the offenders in the Lukoil robbery had committed similar gas station robberies since Jan. 6, in Delaware and Maryland.

Police arrested the driver of the vehicle, Joshua Alexander Foster, 27, and Kyle Joseph Jones, 29, both of Newark, Del. The vehicle was seized and relocated to the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department.

“Yellow Stone Mystery” By Linda Dubin Garfield at the Main Line Art Center

As I scrolled through the participating artists on the Main Line Art Center website, I stumbled upon Nick Cassway whose computer drafted stencils create a manufactured style of to his illustration. One of his recent projects, “Above The Sound of Ideologies Clashing,” finds an entire room covered in his illustrated wallpaper.

The comic book and vintage sign design inspirations are made evident in his color choices and line work. The wallpaper is overwhelming and unique. The deep royal blues and rich tangerines of his palette stamp the walls with confidence. Cassway succinctly words the mission of this project on his website, In this narrative form of surface design – commonly referred to as conversational style –  the story elements never progress, they are snippets of time, frozen in endless unyielding repetition.” He goes on to describe the symbolism of this style as illustrating the inevitability of history repeating itself. A graduate of the Tyler School of Art, Cassway’s illustrations have been featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer, the ArtBlog, Grid Magazine, Philadelphia Weekly, and Art News. Check out this exhibition for the expansive talent and media. Now showing through February 3rd.

Concord Ventures hearings resume

Hearings for the proposed Concord Ventures planned residential development along Watkin Avenue resumed Tuesday with the same tedious testimony by the numbers they had before they were suspended.

Attorney Marc Kaplin, representing Concord Ventures, had engineer Ben Crowder read sections of the Concord Township Zoning Code and then ask him how the proposal meets provisions of the zoning ordinance. Kaplin then had Crowder read sections of opposing counsel Marc Jonas’ remarks, with Crowder saying the remarks were incorrect.

At least one person in the audience fell asleep during the session. Several others admitted they almost did the same.

The gist of Crowder’s testimony, under both direct and cross-examination, was that the plan is consistent with township code, including the amount of open space provided and access to it. However, under cross-examination from Jonas, Crowder did say the township Planning Commission recommended the plan not be approved.

One matter of law to be decided is whether some provisions of the township code need to be satisfied for inclusion in a tentative plan or whether they can wait until a final plan is submitted.

Hearings were suspended in June after a zoning variance expired and the applicant failed to apply for an extension. According to code, the PRD needs a minimum of 50 acres but the site involved is 49.02 acres. Concord Ventures had to go back to the Zoning Hearing Board for another variance, which was granted in September, according to Kaplin.

The plan calls for 29 townhomes in six buildings and 166 apartments in three five-story buildings. Opponents have said the development is not in the best interest of neighboring homes.

Lori Kidd, one of the residents Jonas is representing, said last year that the apartment buildings and their parking lots would crowd space, block sunlight and intrude on privacy for residents on Dain Avenue.

The next hearing is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. on Jan. 22.
