David Charles of Chadds Ford

David Charles, 68, of Chadds Ford, a loving husband and father of two children died on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

He was born in 1950, in Media, to John and Grace Charles. He received his bachelor’s degree at Villanova University and his master’s degree at Temple University. Dave, as he was known, worked for Christiana Care for over 30 years and retired in 2016.

He had a passion for classic cars, golfing, and summers in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He was also known for his love of animals, in particular, his Bouvier, Bear.

Dave is remembered with love by his wife of 37 years, Valerie, son Jay, daughter-in-law Pauline, daughter Dori, and son-in-law Ryan. Dave will also be fondly remembered by his two grandchildren, Hadley and Landon, and by his sister Lydia.

A memorial service in memory of Dave will be held on Friday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, Delaware 19803.

Flood warning until 8:30

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for eastern Chester and Delaware counties through 8:30 p.m.At 230 p.m., creeks and streams were continuing to rise due to runoff from today’s heavy rainfall. Minor flooding will take place into this evening along creeks and streams, and in areas of poor drainage. Some locations that could experience flooding include West Chester, Westtown and Kennett Square.

Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Helen E. Olivieri of West Grove

Helen E. Olivieri, 90, of West Grove, died Sunday, Jan. 20, at her residence.

Born in Landenberg, on Dec. 1, 1928, she was the daughter of the late William Rigler and the late Lydia Crossan Rigler. She was one of eight children: William (Tucker), Laura (Perk), Mary (Pip), Audrel (Audey), Lydia, Earl, and Margaret (Magee ). Helen was very proud to be a member of the Rigler family and of her Landenberg roots.

She is survived by her sister, Margaret, her two sons, Francis G. Olivieri and his wife Lorelei and Thomas J. Olivieri and his wife Karen, and one grandchild, Elena Bethany Olivieri.

You may visit with her family and friends from 10 to noon on Monday, Jan. 28, at the Kuzo Funeral Home, 250 West State Street in Kennett Square. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Route 82 in Kennett Square.

Visitors to the Brandywine River Museum of Art enjoy an arctic barbecue in the museum courtyard on Jan. 19.

The Chadds Ford Historical Society will hold Escape Brandywine events on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. This escape room experience occurs inside an authentic historical house with a Revolutionary War mission. Escape Brandywine places participants into roles of spies on the eve of the Battle of Brandywine. Using real 18th century spy techniques, codes and cyphers, players have 60 minutes to solve puzzles, locate battle plans, and escape to deliver the plans to Gen. George Washington. Design Zone, a new exhibit at the Delaware Museum of Natural History opens this Saturday, Jan. 26.

A new exhibit at the Delaware Museum of Natural History opens a new exhibit this Saturday, Jan. 26. Design Zone is an interactive, hands-on exhibit where visitors can explore a variety of creative concepts to learn the processes and tools needed to create a successful design. Design Zone is organized into three thematic zones, all highlighting the importance of science and mathematical thinking in areas critical to building creativity and innovation: art, music, and engineering. The exhibit runs through May 12. Admission is $9 for ages 3-59, $8 for seniors, $3 for children ages 1-2. It’s free for babies under 12 months and for museum members.

The Board of Supervisors of Chadds Ford Township has determined that an updated Village Community Plan is necessary to determine the impact of the Walkable Chadds Ford project on what is currently known as the “Village.” A community forum— the first of two on the subject — will be held Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. in the township building at 10 Ring Road.

PAWS for People will be conducting training for potential pet therapy teams in Kennett Square during February. Sessions are planned for Mondays Feb. 14 and 28 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at The Friends Home, 147 W. State Street. Anyone with a gentle, people-friendly pet who is interested in volunteering time to work with children and adults with varying needs should attend.
