Letter: Andrew for state rep

In Pennsylvania’s 160th Legislative District, it’s time for a change. I believe that Anton Andrew, a first-time candidate from Kennett Square, is the right choice to serve as our representative. Anton lives in Kennett Square, and I’ve been proud to call him my friend for the last 7 years.

Here’s a brief summary of Anton’s background and career: He served as a public defender, helping those who had no representation. He created and led a non-profit that helped women- and minority-owned small businesses. And he helped create the Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County.

But what I think is even more important is that Anton has signed a “No Nonsense Pledge.” He was actually the first candidate in Pennsylvania to sign it. That pledge includes to not take gifts and to support legislation to ban gifts to legislators; to work with transparency and across party lines to pass a fair budget; to support legislation removing the responsibility for the redistricting process from the partisan inclinations of the legislature and to deliver it to a nonpartisan citizens commission.

Anton’s opponent Steve Barrar has not signed this pledge. In fact, Barrar helped to preserve partisan gerrymandering in Pennsylvania. He voted against House Bill 722 — which would have ended gerrymandering in Pennsylvania — from getting out of committee.

Anton is also a sponsor of the bipartisan American Anti-Corruption Act. That act would make it illegal for politicians to take money from lobbyists, and also make it illegal for politicians to become lobbyists. Again, Steve Barrar is not a sponsor.

We need to restore ethics and integrity to politics. Anton Andrew has spent his career helping people who needed to have their voice heard. And his actions as a candidate make me think he’ll keep doing that in Harrisburg.

I encourage you to vote for Anton Andrew for State Representative this Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Harry R. Luzetsky (Ricky), 22, of Kennett Square, died Oct. 27. He was a laborer/apprentice bricklayer at Diamond State Masonry.

He will be greatly missed by all that knew him and those who will miss knowing him due to his short life.

Ricky is survived by his loving family: his parents, Harry and Michele; and his sisters, Ashlee and Maura.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Michael and Mary Redden; and his paternal grandparents, Harry and Mary Luzetsky.

John C. Gebhard of Kennett Square

John C. Gebhard,92, of Crosslands in Kennett Square, died peacefully on Oct. 24. He was a family man, married to Joyce for 63 wonderful years and was an active father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He enjoyed traveling with friends and family, reading, and educational opportunities of all kinds. John was an honest, kind and good man; a man of integrity. He looked forward to each day with fascination. Ever the realist, he enjoyed science fiction the most. Practical, analytical at heart, he let those around him do the unnecessary worrying. He was happy and lived life in a humble uncomplicated manner, living at peace with himself and with others. He loved his wife and best friend, Joyce, very much.

John was born in Seattle, Wash. to Capt. John C. Gebhard and Jean (Hall) Gebhard. He served in the Army as a medic in WWII. John received a degree from Lehigh University and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Cornell.

John began his career as a scientist and inventor at DuPont in 1951 where he worked until 1988. There he met his future wife Joyce who was working as an analytical chemist. He was civic-minded throughout life and served on the Unionville School Board, Pocopson Township Supervisory Board, in Rotary and on various committees in the Crosslands community.

John is survived by his loving wife Joyce, three children Scott (Pam) Gebhard, Bob (Patty) Gebhard, and Cindy Gebhard (Tim Scheid); seven grandchildren Annie (Jeff) Massey, Laura (Luke) Havrilla, Julie (Kelly) Robinson, Cassidy Duhon (Dan Carter), Amanda Duhon, Matthew Gebhard, and Daniel Gebhard; and three great-grandchildren Jack Massey, Reid Massey, and Robbie Robinson.

The family is exceptionally grateful for the supportive, caring staff and residents of the Crosslands community.

A memorial gathering is being held by the family at Crosslands on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, NY, NY 10018 or to a charity of your choice.
