A bang and boom in Birmingham

Birmingham Township residents, especially those along Meetinghouse Road, will be getting notice this week about an event scheduled for their area next month. The Brandywine Conservancy will celebrate the acquisition of 13 more acres of the Odell property.

The event scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 11 — is invitation only, but Andrew Stewart, the director of marketing and communications for the conservancy, said during the township Board of Supervisors’ meeting last night, that the neighbors will be invited, as will supervisors and others from neighboring townships.

There will be a bang and a boom or two. Stewart said they are planning to have some musket fire and maybe a cannon volley. It will be a celebration of acquiring those 13 other acres (the conservancy already owns 100 acres there) and commemorate the Battle of Brandywine fought on that property on Sept. 11, 1777.

Other business

Supervisors authorized advertising an update to the township’s solicitation ordinance. Police Chief Tom Nelling told the board the proposal is to bring Birmingham’s ordinance in line with adjoining townships.

The current ordinance allows door-to-door soliciting from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The proposal would change those hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Supervisors also approved the hiring of a new part-time police officer at a rate of $19 per hour.
