Roadwork for June 16 – June 22

PennDOT has announced the following road projects, which are weather-dependent and could affect residents in the greater Chadds Ford area during the week of June 16 through June 22. Motorists are urged to allow extra time if they are traveling through one of the construction zones. Work schedules are subject to change.

• PennDOT has reopened the bridge carrying Pocopson Road over Pocopson Creek in Pennsbury and Pocopson townships following the completion of a rehabilitation project. Over the last six weeks, PennDOT’s contractor worked to rehabilitate the bridge by removing and rebuilding three of the four wingwalls and performing other miscellaneous repairs on the structure

• Road widening will force lane closures on Conchester Highway, between Route 1 and Clayton Park Drive in Concord Township between June 18 and June 21.

• Periodic lane restrictions continue through Oct. 20, on Conchester Highway, between Route 1 and Foulk Road, in Concord Township.

• Spring Valley Road in Concord Township, between Fellowship Road and Conchester Highway, will be closed and detoured between June 26 and Sept. 28.

• Utility installation will cause lane restrictions on Thornton Road in Concord Township beginning May 1 through June 29. Work between Trimble Road and Colonial Circle is expected to continue through Aug. 2.

• Utility installation will also cause lane restrictions on Thornton Road between Colonial  Circle and Aldan Road through June 29.

• Utility installation will cause lane closures between E. Baltimore Pike and Cope Road on Millers Hill in Kennett Township beginning June 21 through June 28.

• Expect lane restrictions on Price Street, between S. Wayne and S. Bradford streets, in West Chester for utility installation through Aug. 10.

• Bridge rehabilitation will cause the closing of Pocopson Road — between Street and Parkersville roads — in Pocopson and Pennsbury townships through Sept. 1.

• Barrier installation continues to cause indefinite lane closures on Brandywine Creek Road, between Green Valley and Powell roads, in Newlin Township.

• Utility installation will cause lane closures on Llewellyn Road, between Lenni and Valleybrook roads in Concord Township, from June 18-25.

• Station Road, between Concord Road and Conchester Highway, in Concord Township, is closed through Oct. 20, for road construction. Detours are posted. Station Road will also be closed between Conchester Highway and Partridge Lane through June 30.

Twisted Vintner: Food, wine and service

Twisted Vintner: Food, wine and service
Rotarians in arms, event Chair Sue Mardinly and fellow Rotarian Donna Reeves, enjoy the Rotary’s prime fundraising event.

The eighth annual Twisted Vintner took over the parking lot of the Concordville Town Center Thursday night with the goal of raising money for the Concordville-Chadds Ford Rotary.

Event Chair Sue Mardinly said the group had no specific financial goal for the event but wanted to keep the effort on par with past years. During those first seven years, she said, Twisted Vintner has raised more than $300,000 for various service projects.

Lisa Vonderstuck, owner of Brandywine View Antiques, left, shows off a favorite item at Twisted Vintner. With Vonderstuck is former Chadds Ford Supervisor Deborah Love who was volunteering at the event.

Among the beneficiaries of the Rotary’s efforts are Camp Bournelyf and the Rachel Kohl Library. Mardinly added that the Concordville chapter has its own projects such as providing scholarships for under-achieving seniors at Garnet Valley High School who increase their grade-point average during their senior year. Vo-Tech students also get some scholarships, she said, and there are “Book Scholarships” for students who win some essay contests.

Event Co-chair Don Culp called Twisted Vintner “an unknown gem in your own backyard.” He explained that the gem is the generous giving coupled with outstanding food, wine and beer.

Twisted Vintner has grown in its eight years. It was originally held at Garnet Ford on Route 202 but soon needed more space. However, it has held true to its early roots of being a contest for homemade wines, though commercial vintners now take part in the fundraising effort. Local restaurants, along with Acme Markets and The Meat House provide the food.
