To The Editor: Democrats plan inaugural affirmation

The Kennett Area Democrats had planned an inauguration day protest, but my thinking as vice chairman of KAD, has evolved significantly.

In President Obama’s farewell address, he asked us to go outside of our political bubbles to find common ground with others. In that context, I realized that the action we were planning was not a protest at all. It is, instead, an affirmation of a fundamental American principle that we all share: Hate has no home here in the United States of America.

Consequently, the Kennett Area Democrats are sponsoring on Facebook and other social media an ‘Inauguration Day Affirmation: Hate Has No Home Here.’ We invite your readers to join us in affirming our commitment–as a nation–to this principle.

On Inauguration Day, let it not be about politics.

On Inauguration Day, let it be about national unity and who we are as a people.

Here are some things your readers can do to participate on social media:
1    Make the ‘Hate Has No Home Here’ poster your profile picture;
2    Post status updates throughout the day using the poster;
3    Post a selfie, create your own meme, or use memes we have created that may be downloaded at https://www.dropbox.com/sh/yrjkpjrrl8wpafo/AADOZu6Esl2jPH5-D0i2knrpa?dl=0;
4    Use the hashtag #HateHasNoHomeHere in all of your posts;
5    Share this letter to invite your friends to join us.

When you post, you will be telling the world that:

#HateHasNoHomeHere in my heart.
#HateHasNoHomeHere in my home.
#HateHasNoHomeHere in my neighborhood.
#HateHasNoHomeHere in my town.
#HateHasNoHomeHere in my state.
#HateHasNoHomeHere in my country.

I hope to see you (virtually) on Inauguration Day.

U-CF in MLK Day of Service

Volunteers at Unionville Elementary School make blankets for patients at AI duPont Hospital.

More than 230 volunteers, students and adults, packed the cafeteria at Unionville Elementary School to provide blankets for patients at the AI duPont Institute during the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service.

And at Hillendale Elementary School, volunteers were preparing lunches for select beneficiaries as part of the day’s activities.

This was the first MLK Day of Service for Unionville’s Principal Michelle Lafferty. She said the day, and the school’s project — Blankets for Buddies — fit perfectly with what UES has been doing this school year.

“We’ve been working on empathy and kindness. What a better way to show that than by making blankets for children in a hospital?”

With help from adults, two blankets were put together, one on top of the other, and then the edges were cut into strips and tied together.

Lafferty said the blankets were to be delivered that afternoon with cards saying “With love from UE.”

She said blanket kits were purchased with money raised by collecting coins. Not all the money was used for the blankets. The extra money will be used to buy items on the AI duPont wish list.

“The kids are very excited,” Lafferty said.

Also during the Jan. 16 service commitment to the late civil rights leader, volunteers at Hillendale were doing what they’ve been doing for years.

HES Principal Steve Dissinger said they were making 300 lunches for Safe Harbor of Chester County in West Chester, and 110 quarts of soup for the Meals on Wheels program of Catholic Social Services in West Grove.

Safe Harbor is a non-profit organization that provides housing, food and access to support services in a structured environment for homeless single men and women in Chester County.
