Artist Jacalyn Beam and The Chadds Ford Gallery came up with their own twist on Halloween with a new exhibit, Treats and Tricks.

Gift bags with candy and discount coupons were given to buyers during the Oct. 28 opening and the first 10 buyers received $50 gift certificates for Brandywine Prime. There was also a raffle for one of Beam’s paintings, “The Meeting Place,” valued at $500. The winning raffle ticket was scheduled to be drawn Oct. 30.

The top painting , of John Milner's house, is one of Beam's favorites in the exhibit that will run through Nov. 13 at The Chadds Ford Gallery.

While Beam is well known for her plein air work and has exhibited in Chadds Ford for years, this is her first solo show at the gallery, something she said is significant for her.

“It’s exciting,” Beam said. “In the 1970s I first came to this gallery and admired it. It means a lot to me because they’re longtime friends and this is a premier gallery.”

There are more than 40 pieces on exhibit and all but a few seascapes were done in and around Chadds Ford. A number of the pieces are brand new, painted during and featuring The Great Pumpkin Carve at the Chadds Ford Historical Society a week before the exhibit opened.

She doesn’t have a single favorite in the exhibit. Rather, she likes several, but for differing reasons.

One, of architect John Milner’s house, she likes because of the frame that’s etched with pinecones, she said. Others, those featuring the Pumpkin Carve, because “they mean so much to Chadds Ford.”

One of those Carve paintings was done in HG Haskell’s barn before Haskell loaded the pumpkins into a truck and took them to the Historical Society.

The exhibit runs through Nov. 13.
