Chadds Ford Calls on Residents to Review Progress and Weigh In on Future of Historic Painter’s Folly

CHADDS FORD, Pa. — August 1, 2025 — Chadds Ford Township is inviting residents to take an active role in shaping the future of Painter’s Folly, a treasured local landmark with deep ties to American art history.

The Township is encouraging the community to review the Painter’s Folly Community Update, a comprehensive report that outlines the work completed to date, the preservation challenges identified, current efforts underway, and potential next steps for the site’s future. The full update is available at:

“We want residents to see the progress, understand the challenges, and be part of the conversation about where we go from here,” said Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Kathleen Goodier. “Painter’s Folly is an essential part of our heritage, and the community’s voice is critical in determining its future.”

Built in 1857 by Samuel Painter, the Italianate-style home served as a residence and studio for Howard Pyle, the famed illustrator and founder of the Brandywine School of Art. Pyle mentored iconic artists like N.C. Wyeth at the property, and decades later, Andrew Wyeth would paint scenes of the house and its surroundings.

Since purchasing the property in 2018 as part of its Open Space program, Chadds Ford Township has launched various efforts to preserve and revitalize the site. These include the 2023 Artist Studios pilot program, pursuit of grant funding, engagement with historical and conservation partners, and two public meetings held in 2024 and 2025 to gather resident feedback.

While the site holds extraordinary historic and cultural value, township officials acknowledge that preserving Painter’s Folly presents significant financial and logistical challenges. The current focus is on identifying viable uses, securing sustainable funding, and ensuring long-term accessibility for the public.

Supporting these efforts is Ed Worteck, Professor Emeritus of Art and Art History and the Township’s appointed Painter’s Folly Liaison. Worteck has led documentation and outreach initiatives and secured expert endorsements to bolster grant applications and national recognition of the site.

“The story of Painter’s Folly is one of creativity, resilience, and place,” said Worteck. “Our job now is to make sure that story continues—and that it’s grounded in community support.”

Mushroom Festival Launches “Cute as a Button” Baby Photo Contest: Parents and Grandparents Invited to Enter

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. — Is your little one the cutest mushroom in the patch? The 40th Annual Mushroom Festival is calling all proud parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to enter their tiniest family members in the 2025 Cute-As-A-Button (Mushroom) Baby Photo Contest, open now through August 31.

Held during the Mushroom Festival weekend on September 6–7, 2025, in the heart of Kennett Square—known as the Mushroom Capital of the World—this lighthearted photo contest invites families to share adorable snapshots of their babies and toddlers for a chance to be crowned Cutest Button, Crimini, or Portabella.

Here’s how it works:

Submit a baby photo (non-professional, digital preferred) by Aug. 31 at 11:59 p.m.

A $10 entry fee includes one photo submission

Categories:

  • Button: 6–15 months

  • Crimini: 15–24 months

  • Portabella: 24–36 months

Photos will be displayed at the “Cute-As-A-Button” booth near State and Union Streets during the festival.

Attendees “vote” for their favorites by dropping change into donation boxes or through the festival’s online platform.

Top vote-getters in each category will win a $50 gift card to The Growing Tree Toy Store in Kennett Square and be featured in the Chester County Press and on the Mushroom Festival website.

“This is one of the most beloved and smile-worthy traditions of the festival,” organizers said. “It’s a fun way to celebrate the community and support local nonprofits through your votes.”

All proceeds from the Mushroom Festival, including the baby photo contest, go to support local nonprofit organizations through a competitive grant process. Last year’s event drew thousands of visitors and distributed tens of thousands in community funding.

To enter your baby and learn more about the festival, visit www.mushroomfestival.org or the contest’s official Eventeny page. Only one photo per entry is allowed, and professional photos are not eligible.

So dig through your camera roll and get ready to share your little one’s biggest smile—because in Kennett Square, even mushrooms can be adorable.

CHADDS FORD, Pa. — Whether you’re a seasoned fan or new to the game, this weekend’s polo events at the Brandywine Polo Club offer an exciting blend of sport, tradition and community—just a short drive from the heart of Chadds Ford.

Matches will be held Friday at 5:30 p.m., Saturday at 6 p.m. (under the lights for the popular Starlight Polo), and Sunday at 3 p.m. Gates open early for tailgating, and spectators are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and refreshments for a relaxed, social experience on the club’s 122-acre grounds at 232 Polo Road, Toughkenamon, PA.

Each match consists of several seven-minute periods called chukkas, as teams of four players compete to drive the ball into the opposing goal using long mallets—all while riding at full gallop. It’s a thrilling display of horsemanship and teamwork that appeals to sports fans and social-goers alike.
