Mario G. Lorenzut, formerly of Kennett Square

Mario G. Lorenzut, 91, of Hockessin and formerly of Kennett Square, died Dec. 31, in Hockessin, DE, where he had resided since 2016. Mario was born in Kennett Square, to Guerino Lorenzut and Elizabeth Cordivano, and lived in Kennett for the first 86 years of his life. He was an active member of the Kennett Square American Legion Post 491 and parishioner of St. Patrick Church, regularly attending the early mass on Sunday mornings.

After graduating from Kennett Square High School, Mario served in the US Army, 101 Airborne – Screaming Eagles – from 1951 to 1953. Graduating from Brown Vocational School following his military service, Mario began his career as a carpenter. He joined Carpenters’ Union 626 and worked for Frederick G. Krapf & Sons in Wilmington until his retirement in 1992. Mario married Jean Findley in 1955 and the couple raised their two daughters, Carol and Audrey.

Mario was a hard worker with seemingly endless energy and endurance.  He will be remembered for his master carpentry skills, his mechanical ingenuity, and his eagerness to help his neighbors and friends. He could fix anything. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time at his vacation home in Still Pond, Md. In earlier years, he also enjoyed playing cards and bowling.

Mario is survived by his children Carol Ekhaml (Tim) and Audrey Griffith (David), his grandchildren Matthew Griffith (Annie) and Patrick Griffith, his great-grandson Daniel Riale (Tim’s grandson), and his sister Gloria Currence. In addition to his parents, Mario was predeceased by his loving wife Jean.

The funeral service will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer that memorial contributions be made to American Legion Post 491, 208 East State Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348.

Frances V. Dezzi of Kennett Square

Frances V. Dezzi, 80, of Kennett Square (formerly of Briarcliffe, Delaware County), died Monday, Jan. 3, at St. Martha Center in Downingtown. Born in Philadelphia, and raised in Upper Darby, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Alice (Morrison) Green.

Fran was formerly known as Sister Mary Michael of the order Sisters of the Most Precious Blood Convent, in Shillington. Upon leaving the convent, Fran met the love of her life, her late husband, Vincent J. Dezzi. They enjoyed 35 years of a loving marriage. During her marriage, Fran volunteered her time cleaning and doing floral arrangements for her former church, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Secane.  She devoted over 35 years of service to the church. In her free time, Fran enjoyed being with her family as much as possible and most of all, she loved being a ‘mom-mom’ to her grandson Matthew.

Fran is survived by her son, Vince Dezzi; daughter, Kathy Barron and husband John; grandson Matthew; sister, Alice Green; and brothers, Patrick Green and Tommy Green.  She is also survived by brothers/sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.  In addition to her parents and husband, she is also preceded in death by her brother Johnny Green.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, Jan. 13, from 10 – 11 a.m. at the St. Patrick Church, 212 Meredith St., Kennett Square, PA 19348 where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11.  Burial will follow mass at St. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield. Norma Marie Pia of West Grove

Norma Marie Pia, 85, of West Grove, died Friday, Dec. 31, at Jenner’s Pond Retirement Community in West Grove.  She was the wife of the late Louis J. Pia, who died in 2009 and with whom she shared 56 years of marriage.

Born in New York, NY she was a daughter of the late Secundo Pavese and the late Henrietta Tartaglino Pavese.

Norma was a longtime member of St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Church in Avondale.

Norma enjoyed watercolor painting and golf. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing many loving meals for family and friends. Most of all, Norma will be remembered for her kindness, caring, and compassion for her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Survivors include two sons, John J. Pia and his partner Susan Sagers, Michael L. Pia and his wife, Nancy of Chadds Ford, one daughter, Theresa A. Crossan of Landenberg, 10 grandchildren, Michelle Braun (Derek), Meredith Kosmoski (Peter), John M. Pia (Stephanie), Kristin Hayman (Jordan), Lisa Reed (Hunter) Amy Clark (Jamie), Michael W. Pia (Stephanie) Jennifer Basciani (Vince), Nicholas Toto and Allison Fehnel (Andrew); and 22 great-grandchildren, Crew Braun, Piper and Paisely Kosmoski, Penelope and Paris Pia, Evalyn Hayman, Sawyer and Cohen Reed, Abby and Tyler Clark, Louis and Oscar Pia, Vinnie and Lucy Basciani, Nicky, Kayla, Leeah, Mason, Madison and Kaden Toto, and Gia and Emmy Fehnel.

Norma’s funeral will be held privately at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Avondale. Police Log Jan. 5: Disorderly conduct, DUI, theft

Police said they arrested Brittany Ludwigson, 29, of Linwood, following a disturbance at the Sunoco station at Routes 1 and 202 in Chadds Ford Township on Nov. 13. According to the report, Ludwigson damaged a car and was acting in a disorderly manner.

Police are investigating the theft of a case of Red Bull from Wegmans on Nov. 1. The case of drinks is valued at $152.

Police said they arrested three teenagers, including 18-year-old Tymir Matthews, of Philadelphia, on drug charges in Concord Township on Oct. 15. According to a police report, the arrests came after a traffic stop at 1:15 a.m. in the area of Routes 1 and 202. There were five people in the car. The driver and the front seat passenger had marijuana in their possession, but another occupant got behind the wheel and started to flee as they were being taken into custody, the report said. That person and the car were found 10 minutes later on I-95.

Avondale Barracks

Police are investigating the theft of almost $400 worth of merchandise from the East Marlborough Township Walmart on Dec. 23.

Police said they arrested Raymond Denneny, 39, of New Castle, Del., for a DUI hit and run crash in East Marlborough Township on Dec. 2. The accident happened on Onix Drive at East Baltimore Pike at 7:24 p.m. The report included no other details.
