UHS art gala turns 45

UHS art gala turns 45

Unionville High School Art Gala celebrates its 45th year. This annual art show and sale showcase local working artists and Unionville High School alumni. Due to uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, this year’s show will be a virtual online auction.

The Unionville High School Art Gala strives to include a variety of artists – both new and more established individuals. More than 80 participating artists express their talents through diverse mediums including oil and watercolor paintings, photography, glass, metal, pastels, mixed media, jewelry, ceramics, mosaics, and wood.

As part of the virtual auction, a silent auction featuring beautiful artwork donated by talented artists in the show and select regional activities and outings will also be offered. Sponsorships, which consistently are key components to the success of the Gala, are available now at all levels for both businesses and families. Please see our website for details on how to become a business or family sponsor at https://www.unionvilleartgala.com.

Thirty percent of proceeds from show sales and 100 percent of proceeds from the silent auction and sponsorships will benefit the UHS PTO, contributing toward educational enrichment projects that enhance the overall educational experience for all Unionville High School students. In addition, funds will help make local community outreach efforts possible.

A preview of the art show and sale will be available on Nov. 11, beginning at noon. Online bidding begins Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. and will close Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. Links to the preview, online bidding, and sponsorship information are accessible through the Unionville Art Gala website at https://www.unionvilleartgala.com or the Unionville Art Gala Facebook page. Don’t miss this exciting and unique annual opportunity to discover amazing work from our local artists!

Route 1 work continues

Workers tend to the wing wall, part of the bridge support system, for the rehabilitation of the Route 1 bridge over the Brandywine in Chadds Ford Township.

It’s been a frustrating few months for motorists driving along Route 1 through Chadds Ford Township — and the frustration will continue into December. After a winter break, frustration will be back for a little while.

There are two aspects to the work. First is the continued repairing of the bridge over the Brandywine Creek, and the second is preparation for repaving of the road from the bridge to Route 202 in Chadds Ford and then to Route 322 in Concord Township.

Work on the bridge began in June after an inspection showed deterioration of the concrete support pedestals. As a result, the right lanes in both directions have been closed. They will reopen sometime in October when the left lanes will close until sometime in December.

While the support pedestals have been repaired, the contractor is now working to replace the expansion dams between the bridge and the approach roadway, according to PennDOT spokesman Brad Rudolph.

The rest of the construction — from the creek to 202 and beyond — is for the planned repaving of Route 1. Work along that stretch consists of cutting and patching, also into December. But then work will stop until spring when temperatures warm enough to allow the paving material to set properly.

“Paving season restrictions will prevent us from paving this area in December,” Rudolph said.

He added that the concrete median barrier would remain. Any work on the barrier would be limited to repairing or replacing the attenuators that protect the ends of the median.

Leader Sunoco inching back

All service bays are back up and operational at Leader Sunoco.

It’s a matter of perspective. Is the glass half-full or half-empty? For Dan Leader, of Leader Sunoco, his attitude is better.

“I’m feeling much more positive now,” he said.

The previous negative attitude came after the flooding from Hurricane Ida four weeks ago. While the station still can’t pump any gas, at least all three service bays are back up, and the wheel and tire balancing machines have been replaced. And the credit card machine is running again, too.

Timing on gasoline remains a mystery, however. The flooding destroyed the pumps and ruined 7,000 gallons of gasoline. The pumps are on backorder and the station is not sure when they’ll come in.

“It’s going to be weeks, maybe months,” said Jim Leader. “When the lights come back on our price sign, then you’ll know we have gas.”
