Letter to the Editor: U-CF board avoiding parents

After the August school board meeting, the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District board members decided to retreat to a virtual format in order to avoid having to face parents who could not be trusted to act with “civility” and, in the words of Board President Jeff Hellrung, because there was a controversial topic “likely to spark even more parent anger than masks” on the September agenda.

There were other reasons given, such as fear of Covid spread and “fears for their safety” due to the behavior of parents in other districts (the worst thing they could say about our parents were that one parent “refused” to stick to his three-minute time limit, and they were interrupted in their business by some heckling which they shouldn’t have to tolerate).

Clearly, at this point, there is no legitimacy to their “fears of safety,” and it was clear that the primary reason they retreated to a virtual format was to avoid having to deal with or be interrupted by angry parents as they conducted their business.

I’ve engaged in a lengthy email exchange with Mr. Hellrung, at first inquiring why the board changed the September format to virtual, then informing him of his legal and moral obligations under the state Sunshine Act to the parents of UCFSD to allow them to attend and face the board in person. But I have been stonewalled.

Although at the current moment, the October board meeting is still scheduled to be held in the auditorium, Mr. Hellrung has made it clear they reserve the right to move any meetings to a virtual format, so clearly, we cannot trust that the October meeting and others on the future docket will not be moved to virtual as well.

Road Report Sept. 18 to Sept. 24

Lane closures on the Route 1 bridge over the Brandywine will continue into December.

PennDOT has announced the following road projects, which are weather-dependent and could affect drivers in the greater Chadds Ford area during the week of Sept. 18 to Sept. 24. Motorists are urged to allow extra time if they are traveling through one of the construction zones. Work schedules are subject to change.

Roadwork for two projects on Route 1 through Chadds Ford will continue to be a problem for motorists during the remainder of 2021. Lane closures remain in place in both directions on Route 1 between Hoffman Mill Road and Fairville Road in Chadds Ford and Pennsbury townships, under a project to repair the Route 1 bridge over the Brandywine Creek. The right lane closures will remain in place 24/7 through mid-October. Once the right lanes reopen to traffic in mid-October, the left lane in both directions will close through late December to continue expansion dam replacement.

Work crews continue to prepare Route 1 for paving and that will continue to cause traffic delays.

Work crews will also continue to prepare the roadway between Hoffman Mill Road and Route 202for repaving. Cutting and patching will continue for several months but the actual repaving won’t begin until sometime in the spring. Under this project, PennDOT’s contractor will mill, overlay, and rehabilitate the existing pavement; perform concrete patching and concrete base repair as needed; construct new concrete curbed median; install new pavement markings, rumble strips, delineators, and signs; and upgrade guide rail and curb ramps.

Utility repair will cause lane closures on Baltimore Pike between Excelon Way and McFarlane Road in Kennett Township from Sept. 20-24.

Traffic signal installation will cause lane closures on Route 82 between Cedarcroft Road and Unicorn Lane from Sept. 20-24.

Storm damage has forced the closing of the Street Road Bridge over the White Clay Creek in West Marlborough Township. PennDOT is listing the closure as indefinite.

Storm damage also closed Embreeville Road Bridge over the West Branch over the Brandywine Creek in Newlin Township. That closure, too, is listed as indefinite.
