Board gives tentative OK for scout project

Chadds Ford Township Supervisors gave preliminary approval Wednesday night for an Eagle Scout project proposed by Akash Patel. Patel, a rising sophomore at Unionville High School, and a member of Boy Scout Troop 31 wants to make improvements at the municipal building.

Patel’s plan calls for adding two wooden benches at the building entrance and two wooden tables and benches on the side deck. He said that the details might change before he’s ready for final approval.

Supervisors’ Chairman Frank Murphy said Mike Schneider, the township engineer, would be involved because of legal requirements.

The next Chadds Ford Township Board of Supervisors’ meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.

International Overdose Awareness Day, Aug. 31

Last year, 110 pinwheels were displayed at the Chester County Government Services Center on International Overdose Awareness Day – representing the 110 lives lost in 2018 to accidental drug overdose. This year’s display of pinwheels will represent an additional 104 lives lost to accidental drug overdose in 2019.

As part of Chester County’s commitment to tackle the opioid and heroin epidemic, the County’s Department of Drug & Alcohol Services announces the County’s participation in “International Overdose Awareness Day” on Monday, August 31, 2020.  On this day, the County will be joining communities around the world in encouraging residents, businesses and organizations to raise awareness of overdose, reduce the stigma surrounding overdoses and drug related deaths, remember the lives lost to overdose and acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends who have lost a loved one.

To mark the occasion, 104 pinwheels will be displayed in front of the Chester County Justice Center on Market Street in West Chester and the West Chester Borough Building on Gay Street in West Chester, representing the 104 lives lost to accidental overdose in Chester County in 2019.  In addition, citizens are invited to participate in a social media campaign in which a pinwheel graphic is shared to remember loved ones and spread awareness on that day.

“Again this year, we join communities across the country to remember the lives lost to, and those still battling substance use disorders,” said Vince Brown, Executive Director of the Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services.

“Although we saw a slight decline in accidental overdoses here in the county last year, substance use disorders are still extremely prevalent,” he added. “We encourage residents, businesses and community groups to join us in raising awareness of substance use disorders, reducing the stigma, and acknowledge the lives we have lost to an accidental overdose.”

In years past, “in-person” events have been held on August 31st in honor of “International Overdose Awareness Day”.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chester County Department of Drug & Alcohol Services encourages all partners and county residents to participate in a virtual social media campaign:

  • Download and save the International Overdose Awareness Day Pinwheel graphic here.
  • Upload the graphic to your personal or business social media accounts with a message remembering loved ones, or information on International Overdose Awareness Day found here. Be sure to use the hashtag #ChescoIOAD.
  • Experience the community by checking out the hashtag #ChescoIOAD on your social media account to see others who have posted.

Chester County remains committed to tackling the opioid and heroin epidemic through health, education, treatment, and law enforcement measures, coordinated by its Overdose Prevention Task Force.  The task force has over 40 community partner organizations involved.

For more information and resources on all drug and alcohol services and programs, visit the Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services website: www.chesco.org/DrugandAlcohol, or call the Chester County Information and Referral line at 866-286-3767.

UCF residents earn 4-H certificates

The Penn State Extension in Chester County recognized seven youth as part of their annual Spirit of 4-H Award last week. Two of the honorees live in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District.

Colton Nolan, of East Marlborough Township, has been an active member of Manor Dairy Club for 10 years. He credits 4-H for giving him an opportunity to learn to care for and prepare animals for show.

He has helped at countless dairy promotion events from a petting zoo, Tractor Supply Paper Clover events, community events, and at nursing homes. He has been an asset to his club and the 4-H dairy program and is always willing to jump in and help other members. According to his leaders, “he has a kind heart and patient when helping younger members with their animals.”

Melinda Stoltzfus, of West Marlborough Township, nominated by the Golden Fleece Sheep club, is also an active member of the Beef, Swine, Goat, and Teen Council Clubs. She credits 4-H as having impacted her life more than she could imagine and instilled in her a passion for the agriculture industry, as well as, helped her be an effective spokesperson for the agriculture industry.

She has been active in promoting 4-H through various community events and says her 4-H experience has been “life-changing” and she wants every child to the same opportunity and experience as she did through the 4-H program.

The Chester County Spirit of 4-H Award was started in 1998 by Saddle Up 4-H Horse and Pony Club. The award went to a 4-H member that demonstrated the most spirit, enthusiasm, and willingness to do anything for 4-H or the community. It was an honor for 4-H members to be awarded the Spirit of 4-H Award.  In 2007 Saddle Up 4-H Horse and Pony Club, with 4-H Advisory Committee support, made the Spirit of 4-H Award a county-wide award that will be awarded to one Chester County 4-H member at the Chester County 4-H Fair each year.

4-H club leaders nominate one member from each club that demonstrated the most spirit, enthusiasm, and willingness to do anything for 4-H or the community each year. Once nominated the members are asked to complete and return an application to be reviewed by the 4-H Program Development Committee who selects the Chester County 4-H member that is most deserving of the award.

The woman bought the cards, then gave the numbers to the unknown suspect.

A traffic stop followed by a probable cause search lead to the arrest of a 19-year-old man from Baltimore in Kennett Township for DUI and drug charges. Police made the arrest at 12:45 a.m. on Aug. 23 at the intersection of Kennett Pike and Hillendale Road. No other details were released.

Police said they arrested a 25-year-old woman from Lancaster on a variety of charges following a traffic stop in Kennett Township on Aug. 8.
