Business tax amnesty in Chadds Ford

Chadds Ford Township supervisors Wednesday night announced an amnesty for township businesses that are behind in their Business Privilege Tax payments. Supervisors’ Chairman Frank Murphy said the amnesty only applies to penalties accrued and only if those businesses pay their back taxes by April 15.

Murphy explained that a previous tax collector didn’t apply collection procedures equally, that some businesses were never billed and not everyone who was in arrears was contacted to bring their payments up to date.

The BPT is $100 per year and the penalty is also $100 per year for each year the tax is not paid.

If the businesses pay their back taxes by April 15, they won’t have to pay any penalty. Businesses that have paid penalties will be reimbursed, he said. But that ends April 15.

Other business

Murphy announced there will be an informal meeting from 7-9 p.m. on Feb. 7 regarding the Village Zoning. He said the township heard from a number of people, including businesses, following the December Planning Commission meeting regarding a possible multi-use plan for properties between the Barn Shops and Webb Road.

In a follow-up email he said people don’t necessarily want any particular plan, but “they desire some expansion of village to attract more visitors. The form of that expansion and whether it included higher density residential was not really discussed. Only that the general concern that ‘something should be done to promote and strengthen the village’ should be considered.”

Others, however, are concerned about more density. “So, it seemed to me a conversation about all this amongst all the stakeholders would be a good idea,” he said.
