Mixed Media: Art exploring space and movement

Through the Wood by Elise Phillips at Church Street Gallery

The severe rain held off long enough last Friday for Kennett Square to welcome a bustling crowd to its’ Expanded Art Stroll. Congratulations to all the merchants, artists, organizations and volunteers for contributing to such a fun event. Special shout out to Casa Guanajuato for their phenomenal installation experience, “Journey to Mictlan” the sawdust carpet installations, the costumed characters, and the ambience at the Garage Community Youth Center attracted people in droves and transformed the space into a magical celebration for Dia de Muertos. Well done, Casa Guanajuato and volunteers!

If you missed it, last weekend the Delaware Contemporary unveiled a new exhibition by Linda Celestian and Linnea Tober entitled, “Flow.”  Through digital photography, mixed media sculpture and painting, the two local artists explore the concept of space and movement in their respective works.  The exhibition has been curated by Morgan Hamilton and will run through January 9.

Also this month at the Delaware Contemporary, get your tickets for SABA IV. SABA stands for Small Art Buying Adventure. Artwork from international to local established artists will be available for purchase for $25 a piece. The work will be displayed anonymously until sold. Enjoy live music by Milan and The Sour Goat and catering by Drip Cafe. VIP tickets  include champagne hors d’oeuvres, art preview and a chance to reserve a piece for work are $100 from 6 – 7 p.m. Standard tickets for the event from 7 – 9 p.m. are $35 online, $40 at the door.

Some shows will be coming to a close this weekend. “Influenced: Mitch Lyons” at Art Trust is coming to a close. The artist talk will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. The exhibition comes down Friday. Check it out before it’s gone! The tenth annual National Juried Exhibition at Oxford Art Alliance will also be coming down this weekend. The closing reception will be held tonight from 6 – 8 p.m.

As one show closes, another opens. Check out Church Street Gallery tomorrow night for the opening reception of Elise Phillips: In The Open Air. Take in Phillips bucolic landscape paintings. The warm glow and familiar rolling hills of the region, elicit such a specific local appreciation for the fall season. Enjoy this exhibition through December 1st.

Katee Boyle preparing her exhibit at Gallery Duo

“Reflections of Her Smaller Self,” a solo exhibition of paintings and sculpture by local artist Katee Boyle will be on display at Gallery DUO in Chadds Ford. I have a soft spot for this gallery as they are tucked back in the forge building in the adorable Fairville village. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it block of vintage brick buildings is set back just a bit from the road but Gallery DUO now has a sign you can see as your driving along, so look out for it tomorrow night as you find your way. Parking in the rear of the building, and the gallery is on the second floor. Enjoy the opening reception from 6 – 9 p.m. Also on display, works by Alessandra Manzotti and Sus Iserbyt from their exhibition, “Reflections on Summer”. See you there!

That’s it for this weeks’ Mixed Media– until next time!

Agave to get liquor license

Agave restaurant in Chadds Ford will soon be able to sell liquor. The restaurant, at 1620 Baltimore Pike in the strip mall where the U.S. Post Office is located, currently is BYOB but township supervisors last night approved a liquor license transfer from Ridley Township.

Restaurant co-owner Chris Medina and Agave General Manager Rory Hirst testified that there would be no other changes to Agave’s current operation. The restaurant does not have any entertainment and will not. Hours of operation — being open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday and an early opening for brunch on Sunday — would also remain the same.

Any physical change would be to add a small bar for mixing drinks, but there would not be a bar where patrons can just to sit at a bar and drink, Hirst said.

In response to questions, Hirst also said employees would be RAMP trained, meaning they would go through the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board’s Responsible Alcohol Management Program.

According to the LCB RAMP website, “…anyone who serves or sells alcoholic beverages and/or checks IDs, including but not limited to bartenders, waiters, certificate distributor sales persons, bouncers, door persons, etc. – must complete RAMP Server/Seller training within six months of being hired…”

Agave currently employs 10 to 12 people, Hirst said, but they might add three more once the restaurant is ready to serve alcoholic beverages.

Supervisors approved the license transfer 3-0.

Supervisors’ Chairman Frank Murphy explained the timeline for the 2019 budget. The board will vote to advertise the budget at its Dec. 5 meeting and vote on it at 4 p.m. on Dec. 28.
