Board gets update on Walkable Chadds Ford

Peter Simone of Simone Collins told Chadds Ford Township supervisors during their June 28 workshop that the Walkable Chadds Ford project is taking shape and that it’s time to look for money.

Simone Collins is the project consultant since inception in 2014. The overall goal of the plan is to increase pedestrian, bicycle and motor vehicle safety in the village area, as well as increasing business.

The first phase of the project would be to establish crosswalks, sidewalks and trails from the Battlefield Park and township building area at Ring Road, down to N. Creek Road. There would also be a four-way crosswalk at Station Way Road, Route 1 and N. Creek Road. That four-way crosswalk would require some easements from three businesses properties at the intersection.

Simone said that could be done for about $1.75 million that could be funded through grants without any local money being used. Of that amount, $1 million could come from a Transportation Alternate Program, know as TAP, grant and the other $750,000 would come from two other grants.

A second phase of the program, to be considered later, would add a trail between Hank’s Place and the Chadds Ford Historical Society, a bike and pedestrian path along Route 1 between Station Way Road in Chadds Ford and Fairville Road in Pennsbury, and another pedestrian crossing from Fairville across Route 1 to Chadds Ford Elementary School.

The bike trail on Route 1 over the Brandywine Creek will have to be put on hold, Simone said, until after the bridge is re-decked. He said PennDOT estimates that to be done within the next 10 years.

This summer, Simone will talk to supervisors in Pennsbury, then return to update Chadds Ford supervisors again in October.

Other business

The regular Board of Supervisors’ July meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, July 5 has been cancelled. The board will still have its July workshop meeting on July 26.

Bardolino Steakhouse now open

Some restaurants have staying power, while others come and go. Some people have one interest, while others explore new ideas.

Those two points come together at Bardolino Italian Steakhouse and Seafood in the Crossroads Center on Route 1 in Concord Township. Bardolino is in the location of the former Mile High Steakhouse. One of the owners of the new venture is Chadds Ford resident Phil Wenrich.

Wenrich is Chadds Ford’s constable, former roadmaster and past president of the Chadds Ford Civic Association. But Wenrich has had a secret, private passion. He loves baking.

Three of the four owners of Badolino are, from left, Sam Mavraj, Lisa Carman and Phil Wenrch.

With that passion for food, Wenrich said he had the opportunity to team-up with a few people to start Bardolino. Wenrich, his wife Lisa Carman, and brothers Sam and Jack Mavraj, opened in early June.

The Mavraj brothers are the professional foodies of the group with a dozen years experience in the business. Sam Mavraj has 12 years experience at La Verona in Kennett Square and Duling Kurtz Restaurant in Exton. Jack Mavraj is the chef. Carman, a physician, is handling the marketing.

Wenrich said the idea behind the restaurant is to mix a medium- to high-end steakhouse with Italian food.

“It’s a place where you can get a great steak and great Italian Food,” he said.

Sam Mavraj added that it’s a place where the whole family can have a great meal, while Carman added that they want to create memories.

For Carman and Wenrich, the location is significant, especially when it comes to memories. It was where the two of them had their first date.

Bardolino, with seating for 185 that includes an 80-seat banquet room, opens at 11 a.m. every day and serves lunch and dinner. Prices range from $10-$18 for lunch and $18-$45 for dinner.

The current lunch menu has salads starting at $8, appetizers starting at $10 and pizzas going for $12 for a cheese pie with tomato, basil and roasted garlic to $16 for the Bardolino, a white pizza with lump crabmeat. Soups are on the fare for lunch and dinner.

Dinner appetizers run from $7 to $16. Entrées include a mushroom risotto for $20, a roasted rack of lamb for $32 and a T-bone steak for $45.

There was no transport or any word of either driver being cited in the report.

• No injuries were reported in a June 22, rear-ender accident on Union Street in East Marlborough Township. Police didn’t identify either driver but said one of the drivers was cited for following too closely. The accident happened at 3 p.m. at the intersection of Union Street and Gatehouse Drive.
