Seminar aims to make nonprofits pilfer-proof

In the wake of continuing headlines about pilfering from nonprofits, the Chester County Office of the Controller has announced a new program.

A free seminar on Tuesday, Aug. 23, will focus on ways that nonprofits can protect themselves from embezzlement and other types of fraud, will explain how thefts occur within nonprofit or community groups, and will offer guidance on how to structure financial controls to avoid fraud, a county press release said.

“This program is in response to the many cases that have been reported not only in our county, but across the commonwealth, regarding fraudulent activity that has unfortunately occurred within community organizations,” Chester County Controller Norman MacQueen said in the release. “The types of groups that would truly benefit from the seminar include school parent and teacher associations, youth sports teams, scout troops, churches and volunteer fire companies.”

The first session will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Chester County Public Safety Training Campus, which is located at 137 Modena Road in South Coatesville. Another is scheduled at the Henrietta Hankin Library in Chester Springs on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 6:30 p.m.

“Timing for this event is in anticipation of the formation of many clubs and groups at the beginning of the school year and fall sports seasons,” MacQueen explained in the release.

Sharon Jones, Chester County’s internal audit manager, will lead the seminar. Jones will be joined by MacQueen and Deputy Controller Carol Pollitz. For questions or further information, email controllerinfo@chesco.org or call 610-344-6155.
