The long-awaited answer to the question – when can area residents taste Bog Turtle’s brews? – is fast approaching, according to Oxford Mainstreet, Inc.
Bog Turtle Brewery will release its first offering at the SawMill Grill, 306 Market St., in Oxford on Monday, Dec. 21, at 5 p.m. The brew, called Devil’s Nine Ball, is a hoppy, citrusy American pale that has been years in the making, a press release said.
The unveiling of this beer has been dubbed a favorite of “the guy living under the brewery floor” by its creators, described as six diehard craft brew enthusiasts. The beer’s name pays homage to some unconventional happenings during the brewery’s building process, according to the brewery’s website.
During construction in the historic structure, two mysteries emerged: What was down the ominously dark hole under the receiving platform, and why did a nine-ball keep turning up in weird places? “Each of us remembers knocking the nine-ball down the mysterious hole at different times, but somehow the ball kept turning up,” the owners wrote. “It seemed we had been playing a weird game of fetch with some unknown partner.”
The owners of Bog Turtle Brewery built every component of the brewery by themselves, including all the brew and mash tun kettles, the control panel, the fermentation vessels, fermentation room, cold room, ramps and stairs, according to the website.
They expressed thanks to all of their supporters, who encouraged them to pursue the transformation of part of the historic building, a process dating back to 2014. “At Bog Turtle Brewery, we believe that if schools taught beer-brewing as part of the chemistry curriculum, we would be a nation of chemists,” the website said.
