Stately bricks, blooms on tour to benefit library

A historic house with stunning, museum-quality art collections and furniture in every room and a farm with a jewelry-making studio housed in a repurposed horse barn are among the attractions of the 2015 Home & Garden Day Tour.

A benefit for the Kennett Public Library, this year’s tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 6. It will explore the Landenberg, West Grove, Avondale, and New London area of the county for the  first time.

Other featured properties include a modern development house that incorporates walls and a staircase salvaged from 18th-century New England homes, a small brick home with an imaginative addition designed and built by the owner, a new stone house convincingly designed to look as though it has existed for centuries, a brick federal house being rejuvenated by the young family who just purchased it, a magnificent old house brought back to its original splendor from literal ruins, and a farmhouse whose heart is the farm’s original 1690 log home.

Visitors will also be able to sample food and beverages donated by local restaurants and merchants. Out of courtesy to the homeowners, visitors should leave their high-heeled shoes at home, and children under 18 are not permitted in the William Miller House. Also, some of the sites may present a challenge for those with mobility issues. For example, the Miller House contains steep staircases.

Finally, if you’re considering sharing your experience with others by taking pictures throughout the day, persuade them to accompany you: Photography is not permitted.

All proceeds from the tour, which will be held rain or shine, will benefit the Children's and Adult Literacy programs at the Kennett Public Library. Tickets are $35 and are available at the library or can be purchased online at www.bayardtaylor.org. To receive a brochure for next spring's tour, e-mail your name and address to mcaez@ccls.org or phone 610-444-2702.
