Pocopson, Conservancy awarded state grants

Pocopson Township and the Brandywine Conservancy have been awarded state grants for historic projects, according to a press release from state Sen. Dominic Pileggi, R-9, of Chester.

The grants, released by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, are intended for the preservation, rehabilitation and restoration activities of historic sites that are eligible for or listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the release said.

Pocopson Township will receive $50,000 for work on the Barnard House, which is being rehabilitated for use as a township building as well as the home of  the Kennett Underground Railroad Museum. The grant will help cover “the final building stabilization by repair and replacement of the windows and doors consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation,” according to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

The $17,000 award for the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art will help preserve the springhouse at Kuerner Farm (built circa 1814), a designated National Historic Landmark. A recent assessment found the springhouse is in need of significant preservation, including roof replacement and structural work, the commission said.

“It’s important that we preserve our Commonwealth’s rich history,” said Pileggi in the release. “Chester and Delaware Counties are full of historical treasures, and I’m pleased to support this important program.”

Grant requests may range from $5,000 to $50,000 and applicants are required to provide a 50 percent cash match in order to show a commitment from the sponsoring organization, the release said.
