Alban Thomas “Tom” Hallowell of Kennett Square

Alban Thomas "Tom" Hallowell,
94, of Kennett Square, died Nov. 2, 2009, at Kendal at Longwood. A native of
Sandy Spring, Md., he was the son of the late Francis Miller Hallowell and
Helen Thomas Hallowell of Sandy Spring, Md., and the husband for 57 years of
Barbara Gawthrop Hallowell of Kennett Square.

Tom graduated from George School and
Swarthmore College and received his doctorate in organic chemistry from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was engaged in Research and
Development with the DuPont Company for over 38 years in Wilmington, DE,
Parlin, N.J., and Brevard, N.C. He worked mainly on photographic film products,
especially medical X-ray film. During World War II, he was exempt from military
service because his work then at DuPont involved research on products for troop
safety. He retired in 1979.

Tom was active in numerous
conservation and community service organizations and in hiking and trail work
in the North Carolina mountains. He received the Beyond 6000 recognition for
hiking 40 of the 60 peaks over 6000 feet in the Southern Appalachians. His
lifelong interest in nature led into nature education work, including
continuing education classes on birds. The Boy Scouts of America presented him
with its Silver Beaver Award for nearly 40 years of service in adult leadership
training. Tom was an outstanding athlete in soccer, basketball, tennis, and
track. Having a delightful sense of humor, he was often called upon to emcee
special events. As an active photographer, he lectured widely with Barbara
using their own slides on nature and adventure travel, much of their travel
having been in the Canadian Arctic.

Tom was a lifelong member of the
Sandy Spring Friends Meeting in Maryland and, after moving to Kendal at
Longwood in 1994, he attended Kendal Friends Meeting. At Kendal he worked as a
volunteer for recycling furnishings no longer needed by residents, was an eager
member of the trail maintenance committee, and helped others frequently in innumerable
ways.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara G.
Hallowell of Kendal; sons John F. Hallowell of Great River, N.Y., and Charles
G. Hallowell of Hillsborough, N.J.; daughter Anne H. Reich of Mahtomedi, Minn.;
son-in-law Peter B. Reich; daughter-in-law Margaret N. Hallowell and former
daughter-in-law Marta C. Hallowell; and eleven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on
Sat., Dec. 5, 2 p.m., at Kendal at Longwood. Interment will be in Sandy Spring,
Md., for immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions
can be sent to the American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry St.,
Philadelphia, PA 19102, or to the Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive,
Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203-1606.  Arrangements
are being handled by the Kuzo & Grieco Funeral Home Inc (610-444-4116) of
Kennett Square.
