Drowning in Brandywine Creek Claims Life of 21-Year-Old Mexican Citizen

CHADDS FORD, PA (July 20, 2025) — A weekend swim in the Brandywine Creek ended in tragedy Sunday morning when 21-year-old Sergio Ayala-Vilchis drowned near Route 1 and Mill Road in Chadds Ford.

Ayala-Vilchis, a Mexican citizen recently staying in Delaware, entered the water with a woman he had met the night before at a Delaware nightclub. The pair decided to go swimming around 11 a.m., but the outing quickly turned fatal.

As they reached the center of the creek, Ayala-Vilchis began to struggle against the current. The woman made it safely to shore, but lost sight of him in the water. She immediately called 911, launching a multi-agency search and rescue operation.

First responders from Concordville, Middletown, Longwood, and Kennett Township fire departments responded, along with Riddle Hospital EMS. Middletown Township’s Engine 50 Search and Rescue team later recovered Ayala-Vilchis’ body submerged in approximately eight feet of water, near where he had last been seen.

Authorities ruled the death accidental. The woman has fully cooperated with the investigation, officials said.

Friends and loved ones described Ayala-Vilchis as a kind, responsible young man with a promising future. His death has sent shockwaves through both his community in Delaware and his hometown in Mexico.

A GoFundMe campaign titled “Ayuda para los gastos funerarios de Sergio Ayala” has been launched by Ana Tenorio of Wilmington to raise funds to repatriate his body. According to the campaign, his mother is awaiting his return to say a final goodbye.

The incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by natural waterways, particularly in areas with strong currents and no lifeguard presence.

Timeline of the Incident

  • 11:11 a.m. — Ayala-Vilchis and the woman entered the creek near Route 1 and Mill Road.

  • Shortly afterward, Ayala-Vilchis panicked in the current and disappeared below the surface.

  • The woman reached shore and called for emergency assistance.

  • Multiple agencies responded to the scene and launched a coordinated search.

  • Ayala-Vilchis’ body was recovered later that day in about eight feet of water.

Chadds Ford officials have not issued any new advisories but urge the public to exercise caution around local waterways.

Anyone wishing to support the family can find the fundraiser online by searching “Ayuda para los gastos funerarios de Sergio Ayala” on GoFundMe.
