Former Eagle William E. Bergey of Chadds Ford

William E. Bergey, 79, of Chadds Ford, died on Dec. 25 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Gowanda, N.Y., Bill lived in Chadds Ford, for 50 years with his wife, Micky. Bill graduated from Arkansas State University in 1969 where he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Arkansas State University ROTC Hall of Heroes where he had been a second lieutenant. In 1976, fans voted him the best player in A-State history, and his jersey was later retired in 1997. Bill was also added to the football Ring of Honor on display in Centennial Bank Stadium.

Bill was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals of the American Football League (AFL) in the 1969 draft. Bill played with the Bengals in the NFL until 1973. He subsequently signed with the Eagles the following year, where he played seven seasons until retiring in 1981. During his career, Bill was named to five Pro Bowls, was a two-time first-team All-Pro, and made one Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XV, which would be his final professional game. He is an inductee of the Eagles Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.

In addition to his parents, John Eugene Bergey and Lois Elizabeth Courtwright Bergey, he is preceded in death by his sister Virginia Lattimore. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Micky Kay Bergey, three sons, Jason Bergey (Tracy), Jake (Heather) Bergey, and Josh (Katie) Bergey, two siblings, Bruce (Carolyn) Bergey and Sylvia (Dennis) Ghromley and ten grandchildren, Brendan, Ruben, Bret, Austin, Caden, Kendell, Fabian, Taylor, Colton and Peyton.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 2nd, from 9:00-11:30 a.m. at the Brandywine Valley Church, 7 Mt Lebanon Road, Wilmington, DE 19803 followed by a memorial service at noon. Burial will remain private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to either the American Cancer Society (cancer.org) or the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org). Road Report Dec. 30 to Jan. 3

PennDOT has announced the following weather-dependent road projects that could affect drivers in the greater Chadds Ford area from Dec. 23 to Dec. 27. Motorists are urged to allow extra time traveling through one of the construction zones. Work schedules are subject to change.

Roadway construction will cause lane closures on High Street between Rosedale Avenue and Union Street in West Chester on Jan. 2 and 4.

Construction is scheduled through the winter on Conchester Highway, Route 452 (Market Street), and Bethel Avenue as part of the $99.4 million project to reconstruct, widen, and improve travel and safety on a 1.4-mile section of the Conchester. Motorists are advised of periodic overnight lane closures on weekdays through Tuesday, April 1, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning.

Manhole repairs will cause daytime lane closures on E. Market Street between Darlington Street and Woodbine Aly through Jan. 31.

Utility and road construction will cause daytime lane closures on S. High. Street between E. Miner Street and Rosedale Avenue through Dec. 31.

The Doe Run Road bridge on Route 82 over Doe Run remains closed indefinitely.

Construction continues to replace Twin Bridges, the South Creek Road bridge over the Brandywine between Chadds Ford and Pennsbury townships. Work is expected to continue through fall 2025. South Creek Road will be closed 1,200 feet south of Bullock Road and 1.1 miles north of Cossart Road. During the closure, motorists are directed to use U.S. 1, Route 52, Center Meeting Road, and Delaware State Route 100 (Montchanin Road). Bicyclists traveling Bike Route L will be directed to use Bullock Road, Ring Road, Ridge Road, and Delaware State roadway Smithbridge Road.
