UCF buying new buses

As anticipated, the Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board voted to buy two diesel buses while it runs a pilot program on electric buses. The buses are from Rohrer Bus Sales for $283,050 ($141,525 each) and they’ll go into service during the 2024-2025 school year. Delivery is expected in July 2024.

Director Rashi Akki said buying the diesel buses is a straight-up purchase, but also explained how this factors into the test program for electric buses. She said the district normally buys four buses every year, but they are getting two electric vehicles to test this year.

“We didn’t want to buy all four buses because we want to see how this pilot program is going to go. And if the pilot program does go well, then a year from now we will end up buying six buses. It all depends on how well this electric pilot goes.”

If it goes well, she said, the district will get six new electric buses next year, and they would be leased. If they decide to stay with diesel, however, those new buses would be bought, not leased.

The board’s next meeting is a work session scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11. The first day of classes for the new school year is this coming Monday, Aug. 28.
