Barbara Batchelder du Pont of Greenville

Barbara Batchelder du Pont, 96, of Greenville, died peacefully at home Tuesday, April 27. She was the daughter of Charles Nathaniel Batchelder and Grace French Batchelder of Hanover, N.H. She graduated from Dana Hall School and attended Pine Manor College and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School, Boston.

In 1944 she married Irénée du Pont Jr. At her husband’s various employment sites, she bore six children in five different cities. She served as a Gray Lady at veterans’ hospitals in Huntington, Long Island, N.Y., and Orange, N.J. She was a member of the Junior Leagues in Parkersburg, W.Va., Charleston, W.Va., and was president of the Wilmington Junior League. She served as president of The Children’s Home, Inc., Planned Parenthood, and the Curative Workshop, all of Wilmington. She never gained weight, wore nice clothes, and seldom used make-up. Above all, she loved her family. Her tabletops are crowded with framed family photographs. She also enjoyed sailing on the skipjack, “Barbara Batchelder,” tennis, golf, bridge, puppets, motorcycling, worn-out shoes, and blunt pencils.

Barbara was predeceased by her daughter Suzanne, her son Irénée 3rd, and her brother, Charles Carpenter Batchelder.

She is survived by her husband of 77 years, daughter-in-law Eugenie Collison du Pont of Hockessin, her daughters Irene Light (Tom) of Lime Rock, Conn. Cynthia Tobias (Terry) of Chadds Ford, Sally Quinn (Rob) of Winchester, Mass., and Grace Engbring (Paul) of Telluride, Colo., 13 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Instead of flowers, give to your favorite charity. Services will be private.

Alicia P. Cullen of Kennett Square

Alicia P. “Ace” Cullen, 92, of Kennett Square, died Monday, April 26, at the Chester County Hospital. Born on Aug. 30, 1928, on Staten Island, New York City, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Watson and Alicia (Begg) Elmore.

After graduating from East Dennis high school on the cape, she attended Missouri Valley College. She drove the Grey Ladies for The Red Cross, was active in The Ground Observer Corps, and volunteered at the Princeton Hospital. In 1951 she married Robert E. Cullen who was employed by the DuPont Company. They spent the next few decades living around the world including Princeton, N.J., Geneva, Switzerland, and Cape Town, South Africa returning to Kennett Square in 1974.

She had several passions which included playing golf, raising dogs, and traveling. She belonged to the Kennett Square Golf and Country Club where she served as chairman, captained the women’s golf team, won several club championships, and played golf into her 80s. In addition, she loved to breed and show dogs. Her house was always bustling with their activity.

She is preceded in death by her husband Robert who died in 2002, after 51 years of marriage and survived by her daughter, Tracy Hoyt, and her husband Michael, Barrington, RI and her son Todd and his wife Sharon, Kennett Square, and five granddaughters: Megan Hoyt Ogura, Kelsey Hoyt, Kimberly Hoyt, Morgan Cullen, and Taylor Cullen.

A private graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at Union Hill Cemetery, Kennett Square. Contributions may be made to the Unionville Presbyterian Church, 812 Wollaston Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348.

Sunday, May 2, is Train Day at The Marshall Steam Museum.

• The Marshall Steam Museum kicks off its summer season this Sunday, May 2, with Train Day, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Train enthusiasts of all ages are invited to a celebration of railroading, with rides on the 1/8-size Auburn Valley Railroad; a variety of train-centered activities, including a very special Gauge 1 live steam layout; entry to the Marshall Steam Museum, with its 1930s working Lionel electric trains display and special railroad-themed exhibits; fresh steam-popped popcorn from our vintage popper; and more. Because everyone is a kid on Train Day, all pay the usual child rate of $8/person (free for members). Tickets may be purchased in advance online or by calling the Friends of Auburn Heights office at 302-239-2385.

• A reminder, this Saturday, May 1, is the Chadds Ford Residents’ Association Cleanup Day. Volunteers are asked to meet at the township building at 8 a.m.

• Seven branches of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine are hosting open houses this Saturday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each of the branches will feature unique offerings. Most local, the Kennett branch, at 101 Race Street in Kennett Square, will offer lunch at its wood-fired pizza food truck, and visitors can take in personal training, pickleball, pottery, and wellness circuit demos. Kids can make crafts while adults get their groove on in our bilingual group exercise classes in both Spanish and English. People can also swim in the pools or let our trained staff help you determine your swimming abilities.

Make a terrarium at the Chester County Historical Center this Saturday, May 1.

• This Saturday, May 1, is a time for people who are Smitten with Succulents as the Chester County Historical Center offers a terrarium workshop. Class sizes are small, and people must wear masks. The cost is $60. To reserve a space, visit the website.

• Beginning this Sunday, May 2, and for the first Sundays of each month into October, the Center for Creative Arts in Yorklyn turns its field into an outdoor marketplace for food and handcrafted gifts. CCArts Program Director Jennifer Hartz refers to the marketplace as a “farmers’ market meets artisan show.” Times for the event are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• The Grand is bringing back drive-in movies at Bellevue State Park in Wilmington beginning this Saturday. The series runs May 1, 22, and 29, June 12, and July 3.  The May 1 movie is “Chicago: The Musical,” starring Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Renee Zellweger. Showtime is 8:30 p.m. The cost is $15 per person — up to four people per car, plus fees and includes a bag of popcorn. Children younger than 12 are free. Tickets are available online only at www.TheGrandWilmington.org.
