No town throws a party quite like Kennett Square, and this September the Borough is gearing up to host three great events—the Mushroom Festival, Kennett Brewfest, and KSQ Restaurant Week. The Mushroom Capital of the World is also home to one of the region’s original craft brew festivals and an exciting and ever-expanding restaurant scene that combines the best of local and international flavors. “These events reflect the rich cultural diversity of our small town, and we encourage residents and visitors alike to participate and enjoy all that Kennett Square has to offer,” says Tom Sausen, President, Historic Kennett Square Board of Directors
The 34th annual Mushroom Festival kicks off on Friday, September 6th, with the community parade and dining and dancing in the streets. In addition to the street fair and carnival, highlights this year include the amateur mushroom cook-off (with a pasta theme), a fried mushroom eating contest, a special pre-screening of a film exploring the health benefits of mushrooms, and the popular soup and wine tasting event. “Along with inflatables and a bungee, this year there will be a zip-line,” says Mushroom Festival Administrative Coordinator Avery Eaton. “Come and enjoy the Festival and Kennett Square from new heights!”
On Saturday evening, September 7th, a concert featuring Hoots and Hellmouth will be held in the Mushroom Festival Special Events Tent in partnership with Anson B. Nixon’s Rock the Park summer concert series. “Food trucks, beer, and wine will be offered for purchase at the show,” say event organizers. “Lots of fun for the whole family with dancing, eating, singing, and community togetherness.”
Historic Kennett Square’s Brewfest always offers a great mix of local breweries and far-flung favorites, and this year’s well-cultivated selection promises to be better than ever. “The 22nd annual Kennett Brewfest is pleased to announce that over 105 breweries will be in attendance this year, 50 of which will serve at our exclusive Connoisseur tasting session,” says “Brewfest King” Jeff Norman, local architect and one of the original Kennett Brewfest founders. “We also welcome 22 first-time breweries, as well as many of your long-time favorites. A fantastic variety of food trucks and great live music by Hake and Jarema as well as Carl Filipiak and the Jimi Jazz Band will round out a fantastic day of beer tasting in Kennett Square.” Save the date Saturday, September 28 @ 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Following on the heels of Brewfest and building on the success of Kennett Square’s inaugural Restaurant Week last February, local restaurants are looking forward to offering a diverse range of special offers, new menu items, and prix fixe combinations at the second KSQ Restaurant Week, September 29th to October 5th. Restaurant Week, a program of Historic Kennett Square, is organized by local restauranteur and Historic Kennett Square Board member Lee Mikles. “Restaurant Week encourages diners to try something different and gives our talented chefs an opportunity to play around in the kitchen and explore new flavors—especially with freshly harvested seasonal ingredients,” says Mikles, co-owner of Grain Craft Bar + Kitchen. “Everyone had so much fun at our first Restaurant Week and received such great feedback from visitors, that we wanted to do another celebration of KSQ restaurants this fall. Kennett’s Restaurant Week is unique because of the variety in food styles and price points that are available.”
