Radnor Hunt Races return May 18

The 89th Radnor Hunt Races, presented by BNY Mellon for the 35th year, will be held on Saturday, May 18, in Willistown Township. The Radnor Hunt Races is a springtime tradition that draws the best thoroughbred horses, riders and trainers across the country, along with around 25,000 spectators enjoying a day in the countryside.

Ticket packages are now on sale to the public, with the proceeds benefiting the open space and clean water programs of the Brandywine Conservancy—the sole beneficiary of the Races for the past 40 years.

The Radnor Hunt Races is a celebrated Main Line tradition dating back to the 1930s. Built on a rich history of horse racing that has been cultivated in this region for nearly 100 years, the Races are supported by the legacy of protecting the stunning open spaces that make this region such a beautiful place to call home.

New this year, the Radnor Hunt Races, in partnership with National Steeplechase Association and TPH Productions, will live stream each race, allowing horse racing fans from around the world the chance to watch the action. The day’s events include six thrilling jump races and the prestige of $170,000 in purse money, a spectacular antique carriage parade, and the much-loved parade of foxhounds. For those looking to compete in a themed tailgate competition, the Picnic Patron tailgate offers top prizes for the best tailgates, as well as awards for the best hats and ties amongst the patrons. Celebrity judges will award the top prize in both competitions.

In addition to the many different entertainment packages available, spectators can purchase tickets to the all-inclusive Fox’s Den, located trackside at the finish line.

“After much success at its inaugural last year, we are excited to bring back the Fox’s Den—the perfect option for those looking to join in on the race day fun without having to set up their own tailgate,” said Kathy Freney Smith, Radnor Hunt Races coordinator. “Tickets to the Fox’s Den come complete with gourmet food, a full beverage service—including a signature cocktail—and a Finish Line view of the racecourse. It’s the best seat in the house for viewing the races!” Fox’s Den guests have the opportunity to mingle with the owners, trainers and riders throughout the day and access the post-Race Preakness party.

The races take place rain or shine on Saturday, May 18; gates open at 9 a.m. There are six jump races throughout the day — starting at 1:30 p.m. — with about a half an hour between each race. The W. Burling Cocks Racecourse at Radnor Hunt is about a mile around, and the horses run clockwise around the circuit for two or three laps, depending on the race. Admission is sold in advance only, through May 10. Entertainment packages begin at $100. In addition to private party packages, a wide variety of tailgate and box seats are available. Police Log March 20: Careless driving, DUI, thefts

Pennsylvania State Police

Charles E. Morgensen, 30, of Coatesville, was charged with careless driving following a March 15 one-vehicle accident on Doe Run Road in East Marlborough Township, according to police. The report said Morgensen was driving south on Doe Run but crossed over into the northbound lane and struck an embankment and then a sign for Sweeney’s Auto Service. Morgensen was transported for treatment of a suspected injury, police said.

Police said Rex R. Anderson, 63, and Deborah D. Anderson, 59, were arrested for DUI and marijuana possession respectively. The arrests followed a traffic stop on Route 1 at Greenwood Road at 4:20 p.m. on March 11.

State police from the Avondale barracks said Wesley Cordell Holloway, 36, would be charged with retail theft after he attempted to leave the Walmart in East Marlborough Township on March 9. According to the report, a trooper and a store employee met Holloway as he was trying to leave the store with an action figure and multiple video game controllers. He was taken into custody and the items were returned, the report said. Charges were pending.

Anastasia Janoszewski, 19, of Chadds Ford, was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana and paraphernalia on Creek Road south of Cossart Road on Feb. 17, police said.

Police said Charles A. Cole, 67, of Cochranville, was charged with following too closely after an accident on Lenape Road at Pocopson Road. According to a report, Cole struck another vehicle that was stopped for a red light at the intersection at 3:46 p.m. on Dec. 26. No injuries were reported.

Southern Chester County Regional Police

Police said Javaun D. Stevens, 23, of Wilmington, was arrested and charged with simple assault and harassment, following an altercation in a vehicle, during which he reportedly struck a female in the face with his hand. The incident occurred on March 9 at 6:45 a.m., on Brittany Drive, in New Garden Township. Police said they observed injury to the victim consistent with the assault as reported. Stevens was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking where he was processed and held for arraignment. He was released on $10,000 bail.

John A. Conner, 21, of Wilmington, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and related traffic offenses, as well as for possession of marijuana and related paraphernalia, following a March 9 incident on Limestone Road, in New Garden Township, a report said. According to that report, police responded to a vehicle in a field, adjacent to Limestone and Southwood roads. Upon arrival, police located a mud-covered Mazda off the roadway and found the driver, later identified as Conner, asleep at the wheel, with the vehicle running. Once awakened by police, Conner exhibited indications of being intoxicated, police said and he was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI. A search of the vehicle produced a bag containing marijuana, according to the report.

A police report said Junior Gonzales-Martinez, 21, of Toughkenamon, was arrested and charged with DUI and related traffic offenses, as well as with endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person, following a traffic stop for an expired registration on March 8 in New Garden Township. Upon making contact with Gonzales-Martinez, police said they observed indicators suggesting intoxication and he possessed no license, registration, or insurance for the vehicle. Police also said that he was transporting two passengers, an adult female and an 8-year-old child. Both passengers were transported to their residence by police. Gonzales-Martinez was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and submitted to a chemical test of his breath, resulting in a blood alcohol level of 0.151 percent.  He was processed and later released pending issuance of a summons.

Jeffrey E. Hoopes, 47, of Landenberg, was arrested and charged with criminal trespass, resisting arrest, harassment, and disorderly conduct, following an incident that occurred 3:37 p.m., in the 900 block of Newark Road, in New Garden Township on March 7, a report said. Police were called to the location for a reported disturbance after Hoopes allegedly walked into a residence and refused to leave at the homeowner’s request. Hoopes had previously been notified that he was not welcome or permitted to be at this residence. When police arrived and attempted to take him into custody, the report said he actively resisted efforts to handcuff him and ignored verbal commands to cease his resistance. Police needed to use a taser to place Hoopes into custody. He was transported to Central Booking where he was processed and held for arraignment. He was subsequently released on $10,000 unsecured bail. The case is pending a preliminary hearing.
