Walter J. Cavanaugh of Glen Mills

Walter J. Cavanaugh, 86, of Glen Mills, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday night after happily watching his beloved Philadelphia Eagles soundly defeat the LA Rams 30 to 23.

Walter J. Cavanaugh

Walter was a graduate of John Bartram High School and Drexel University.  After serving honorably in our armed forces, Walter put his chemical engineering skills to use at Publicker Printing and the Philadelphia Water Company. Freemasonry was an important part of Walter’s life and he spoke fondly of his fellow brothers at the Tacony Lodge.

Reciting sports statistics, no matter the era, came with ease to Walt, and he was never seen walking the halls of Maris Grove Retirement Community without a political history book tucked carefully under his arm. One of Walter’s true passions was for telling “dad” jokes…many of which were pretty darn funny.

Walter is survived by his sister-in-law Esther, his nieces and nephew Esther, Helen and John, their spouses Gregory, Raymond and Karen, as well as his grandnieces and nephews, Catherine, Raymond, Esther and David. Walter is predeceased by his father John, his mother Helen, his step-father Carlton, his favorite aunt Marian, and his older brother John.

You may visit with his family from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, in the  Batton Room at St. John’s  Episcopal Church, 576 Concord Road in Glen Mills. His memorial service will follow at 10. Burial will follow at 12:30 Saturday, in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, 225 Belmont Avenue, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Autism Delaware, either by mail (924 Old Harmony Road Suite 201, Newark, DE  19713) or online (Memorial/Honor option atautismdelaware.org).

Rotary donates from Twisted Vintner

Concordville-Chadds Ford Rotary President Hank Fisher, back row, right, stands with six of the nine beneficiaries of this year's Twisted Vintner fundraiser..

The Concordville-Chadds Ford Rotary Wednesday donated more than $31,000 dollars from proceeds raised from this past June’s Twisted Vintner event. Chapter  President Hank Fisher handed out checks to eight of nine recipients during the Dec. 19 luncheon at Pescatore’s in Keystone Plaza.

Fisher said it was the first time the chapter invited all the recipient charities to the group’s holiday lunch. The group gave out a total of $31,250.

Among the recipients, and the one which received the largest amount, was the Garnet Valley School District, getting $9,500. School Superintendent Marc Bertrando thanked the Rotary and said the Rotary’s values and the districts are the same, “that every student is worthy.”

The Glen Mills School received $1,750.

Receiving $5,000 each were the Rachel Kohl Library, Bournelyf Special Camp, and Mommy Sue’s Children — a school in Haiti that was devastated by a hurricane.

Rachel Kohl Director Susan Sternberg said, “We rely on the kindness of our neighbors to help us keep our doors open,”

She said the money would go toward buying more non-English material. Sternberg said the largest non-English-speaking group comes from a portion of India where Telugu is spoken. Spanish is second and Russian is the third largest of the non-English speaking groups.

Sue Mardinly, a Rotarian, said Mommy Sue’s wouldn’t exist without the Rotary. Tim Greim, the board president of camp Bournelyf, said the camp is truly grateful for the Rotary’s help since campers’ only pay 50 percent of the cost.

Other groups getting donations were CASA, the Nemours Fund for Children’s Health, Darlington Arts Center, Newlin Grist Mill and the Brandywine Youth Club. They received $1,000 each.

Twisted Vintner is the Rotary’s main fundraiser of the year, held every June.
