Dorothy Lee Murphy of Lincoln, Del

Dorothy Lee Murphy, 84, of Lincoln, Del. died peacefully on Sept. 27, surrounded by her family at home.

Raised in Upland, Pa., Dorothy resided in Lincoln, for 25 years, previously residing in Glen Mills. Dorothy was known as a very giving, caring and stoic woman who lived life her way — on her terms until her death.

A dedicated and hard worker, she retired from Dupont Graphics Center in Bethel Township in 1989. She enjoyed traveling with her sisters, watching her granddaughter compete in rodeos, her beloved dog, Sally, and the PBR’s (Professional Bull Riders). In her spare time, she volunteered at the Milford Seniors Center.

In addition to her mother, Catherine Markel and father, Ralph Corkadel, she is preceded in death by her husband, Norman J. Murphy Sr. who died in 1979, and six siblings, Catherine Fleming, Mary Scholes, Norman “Buddy” Corkadel, Carl Corkadel and Jackie and William who passed away as children.

Dorothy is survived by two children, Linda J. Murphy and N. Jim Murphy Jr. and his wife Karen, a sister, Shirley McCoy and a brother, Elmer Lee Markel as well as four grandchildren, Shannon-Lin, Kelsey, Tori and Emily Murphy.

A viewing will be held on Saturday morning, Oct. 6, from 8:30-10-30 at the Pagano Funeral Home 3711 Foulk Rd., Garnet Valley, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Interment, Edgewood Memorial Park in Glen Mills.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s name may be made to Vitas Hospice, 100 Commerce Dr., Suite 302, Newark, DE 19713.

Rachel Kohl Library is gearing up for Halloween with spooky stories on Oct. 30 at 3:30 p.m. for kids aged 4-6, and 6:30 p.m. kids 7-11 years old. These spooky stories will be geared towards different age groups, so please try to come to the event that best fits your child. Come by the library for some fun scares!

Chadds Ford native Jennifer Nicole Campbell, the Delaware County Symphony ’s artist-in-residence will be hosting a special “Open Rehearsal” for children offering them an introduction to classical music with the assistance of the 84-member symphony during a live rehearsal. The program also includes insights into the symphonic sounds including basic conducting technique. The event is Oct. 8 from 6-7:15 p.m. at the Meagher Theater in the Life Building of Neumann University in Aston. This special program is free.

The Academy of International Ballet will perform at the Brandywine River Museum of Art on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 11:30 a.m. Admission to the museum and to the ballet performance are free and there is ample free parking adjacent to the museum. The dancers will perform a variety of classical and contemporary works as well as excerpts from the Nutcracker Ballet, under the artistic direction of Denis Gronostayskiy and Anastasia Babayeva. The seated event will be held in the lower level Lecture Room.

The Great Pumpkin Carve is two weeks away. The annual event at the Chadds Ford Historical Society opens at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18 in the meadow behind the society’s Barn Visitors’ Center. It continues on the 19th, also beginning at 4 p.m. and again on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 3 p.m. The pumpkin patch has been expanded and the Haunted Trail will be “spooktacular”. The event also features live music, hayrides, food, beer, wine and cider. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for kids 7-17. It’s free for children under 7 and CFHS members.

A spooky fundraiser at West Chester University.

Members of West Chester University’s University Theatre group are once again polishing off their theatre skills to cook-up a harrowing Halloween adventure. Now in its fourth year, University Theatre takes over the first floor of the E.O. Bull Center, at 2 Rosedale Ave., on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 7 – 10:30 p.m. to frighten, frazzle and spook members of the community. They’re doing it as a fundraiser for the student-run group. Admission is nothing more than a suggested donation at the door…or your life! About 12 – 15 themed rooms are being concocted this year, including a Dante’s Inferno-themed room, a Seven Deadly Sins room and a Mirror Maze. Tour guides, in character, guide visitors through the Haunted House, leading them from room to room.
