Pocopson leadership stays the same

There will be no leadership changes for Pocopson Township’s Board of Supervisors.

At its reorganization meeting Tuesday, Ricki Stumpo was named chairwoman and Elaine DiMonte was named vice-chairwoman. Alice J. Balsama is the third supervisor.

Other township appointments and committee members were approved on Tuesday, as were meeting dates for 2017.

The supervisors, who normally meet the second and fourth Mondays at 7:30 p.m., will have one meeting in May, August and December, and will change the October meeting dates to the third and fifth Mondays.

Also at the reorganizational meeting, the supervisors approved resolutions naming Longwood Fire Co. EMS as the township ambulance provider, and Longwood and Po-Mar-Lin fire companies as the township’s fire companies.

Other business

Supervisors voted to advertise and reissue a request for proposals to study the historic Barnard House.

The original RFP asked for submissions by Dec. 23. By reposting it, the supervisors hope to draw proposals to study what the house can be used for.

The RFP will be posted on PennBid, which is Pennsylvania’s Electronic Document and Bid Management Program.

Same names with new titles in Concord

As did all townships in Pennsylvania, Concord held its required re-organization meeting on Jan. 3, but with a slight twist.

Instead of re-organizing as a township of the second class, Concord did so as a home rule township. The Board of Supervisors became the Township Council, supervisors became councilmen and councilwomen and, instead of a chairman and vice chairman, Concord’s governing body now has a president and a vice president.

The five people who served on the former board at the end of December are serving on the newly named council and the former chairman, Dominic Pileggi, is the new council president, while John Gillespie, the former vice chairman is now vice president.

Township continuity is continuing with the reappointment of Brenda Lamanna as township manager, JoAnne Demnicki as treasurer and finance director, and Hugh Donaghue stating on as solicitor.

Pennoni Associates continues as the township’s engineering firm; Thomas Comitta also stays as the township’s land planning consultant, and Berkheimer Associates will continue to serve as the collector for local services, admission and amusement taxes.

Council will still meet on the first Tuesday of the month for regular monthly meetings.

One change still to come is that council will increase from five members to seven. While the five-member body will continue through this year, two additional council members will be elected in November.

During the regular session following the state-required re-organization, Council voted to increase members’ pay from $2,000 per year, to $4,125 per year. Pileggi said the increase would go into effect in 2018.

Council also resolved to adjust the township’s fee schedule for permits and increase the tapping fee when residents and businesses tap into the public sewer system. The fee goes from $3,840 to $3,970 per unit.

Council resolved to ask Delaware County for $20,000 because it plans to spend $700,000 on road improvements.

Democrats plan inauguration day protest

Kennet Area Democrats are planning a yard sign protest for Jan. 20, the inauguration day for President-elect Donald Trump. The protest will feature lawn signs saying ”Hate Has No Home Here” in five languages.

The deadline for ordering a sign is this Sunday, Jan. 8.
The deadline for ordering a sign is this Sunday, Jan. 8.

According to Wayne Braffman, vice chairman of the Kennett Area Democrats, the protest is designed  to remind people of the need to be  “vigilant and vocal”  regarding hate in America.

“We’re concerned about where Trump will take us…During the campaign, Trump made statements that were hate-filled toward Muslims, women and gays. That’s not what American is about,” Braffman said. “We oppose hate as a basis for political power. That kind of hate has no home in America.”

He said hate is opposed by all people, not just Democrats.

Kennett Area democrats have ordered 100 of the red, white and blue signs with a stylized U.S.  flag in the shape of a heart, and 73 are already committed. People who want to take part in the protest have until this Sunday, Jan. 8, to get a sign in time.  They can order one by going to www.kennettareademocrats.com. The lone requirement is to make a donation of any amount, Braffman said.
