John Francis Maguire, 50, was arrested on Saturday, March 26, at approximately 6:45 a.m. at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, said Maria Miller, director of communications for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit.

Prosecutors allege that Maguire was in the cockpit of an American Airlines plane and was under the influence of alcohol when he was detained.  He was released by authorities on the same day, Miller said.

“Although we do not often hear of pilots being allegedly intoxicated, the laws apply to everyone - whether one is on the roads or airways,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy said in a press release.

American  Airlines released the following statement: "This is a serious matter and we will handle it appropriately, as the safety and care of our customers and employees is our highest priority.  We do not disclose employment status publicly, so we will not have further details to release."

Miller said an update would be released when an arraignment in 34th District Court has been scheduled. She said it would not be this week; the Wayne County Airport Authority Police are making arrangements for Maguire to be arraigned during the week of April 4.
