D.A. probing gun incident at middle school

Despite his insistence that no students were ever threatened, the Unionville-Chadds Ford superintendent’s email about a gun found in a car idling outside the middle school last week stirred alarm and raised some questions among residents.

The email from Superintendent John C. Sanville on Thursday, Sept 3, said police were called to the school earlier that day after security officials, who regularly patrol the parking lot, saw a holstered gun in a car that had been left running, the email said. It added that police were called and determined the car belonged to a parent who has “the appropriate licenses to carry a firearm.”

Sanville then applauded the vigilance of those who responded to the incident and wished everyone a pleasant holiday weekend, but that was not necessarily the end of the story.

Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said his office is working with the school district and the East Marlborough Township Police Department to investigate what happened. He said he hoped the Chester County Detectives would provide him with a report by the end of the week.

According to state law, anyone who brings a weapon onto school property can be charged with a first-degree misdemeanor. However, the law excludes someone who possesses the weapon for a “lawful purpose,” possession that could be justified by the issuance of a permit.
