Illustrator Brian Selznick exhibit to open at Delaware Art Museum

The Delaware Art Museum presents From Houdini to Hugo: The Art of Brian Selznick this fall. On view from October 18, 2014 through January 11, 2015, this traveling exhibition presents over 100 paintings and drawings by Brian Selznick, an award-winning children’s author and illustrator. Selznick’s world includes images of characters as diverse as magician Harry Houdini, poet Walt Whitman, singer Marian Anderson, and the fictional Hugo Cabret–an orphan who lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station. In 2008, Selznick was awarded the Caldecott Medal for The Invention of Hugo Cabret, which was made into the Oscar award-winning film Hugo (2011), directed by Martin Scorsese.

Selznick’s illustrations animate the imaginations of children and adults with his blending of illusion, history, and adventure. From Houdini to Hugo: The Art of Brian Selznick encompasses works from Hugo and 18 of Selznick’s other books, among them The Houdini Box, Walt Whitman: Words for America, Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride, The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins, and Frindle. The exhibition will also include books, allowing visitors to put each work of art into the context of the story.

From Houdini to Hugo: The Art of Brian Selznick complements the Delaware Art Museum’s world-renowned collection of illustration and works by well-known illustrators such as Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth. Highlights from the Museum’s Illustration collection will be on display in the first and second floor galleries through January 2015.

This exhibition will be accompanied by events and programs this fall, including a Members Preview, a free family day, a book signing with Brian Selznick, film screenings of Hugo, and an after-hours Art is After Dark event. For more information go to http://www.delart.org

Marcus Caedmon Armstrong Macaluso

Marcus Caedmon Armstrong Macaluso

Marcus Caedmon Armstrong Macaluso, 42, died Oct. 3,  just 10 days shy of his birthday.  He had suffered a severe heart attack on Friday, Sept. 26. It became more complicated with brain damage and the discovery of liver cancer.

He is survived by his parents, Brenda and Tom Macaluso, sister, Maura Macaluso, son, Thomas, Thomas’s mother Jessica Peterson and many other loved ones related in Spirit.

Marcus was a devoted father to Thomas.  Marcus’s life has been filled with adventure and helping others. He became a Reiki healer at age 11.  He hiked, not only the entire Appalachian Trail, but much of the West.  He survived an encounter with a mother grizzly bear with her cub in Glacier National Park by being calm and centered.  In 1991 he did a 7 day vision quest with no food in Joshua Tree National Park, California, 10 miles from the nearest road.

After the 1992 Rainbow Gathering in Florida, he and others started Everybody’s Kitchen.  They traveled around the country in a bus feeding the homeless.  After reading the “Bhagavad Gita” on a flight to Hawaii, he encountered some Hare Krishnas while hiking on Maui.  They invited him to come to their ashram.  He lived there, cooked for them and planted a kitchen garden.

While in the Four Corners area, he was approached by a Navajo elder, who showed him hidden rock paintings.  He lived with the Navajo, planted indigenous trees for them, and was adopted as a nephew by the elder.  Marcus has always cared for the planet, it’s wild life and it’s people.  He has done much landscaping and stone work in the area.

Children have always loved Marcus, and felt safe in his presence.  He often took them swimming, fishing and camping, and participated in their sports, especially lacrosse.Three local AA groups that welcome young people are a legacy of his.  And much of his time has been spent with these individuals.  Sometimes he gave out copies of “Siddhartha.”  Ministry to the infirmed and elderly was also his calling.

Please respect the family’s need for privacy:  no phone calls, visits, food or flowers.  They will reach out as needed.  Please continue to hold everyone in the Light.  Perform acts of kindness in Marcus’s memory.

A Memorial Meeting for Worship will be held in his honor at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at London Grove Friends Meeting, 500 West Street Road in Kennett Square.  Contributions may be made in Marcus’s name to Kacie’s Cause, 232 Longwood Rd., Kennett Sq., PA 19348 and Kennett Area Community Service, P.O. Box 1025, Kennett Sq. PA 19348.

Arrangements are being handled by the Kuzo & Grieco Funeral Home (610-444-4116) of Kennett Square.  To view his online tribute and share a memory with his family, please visit www.griecocares.com
