Road report for the week of Aug. 18

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced the following road projects, which are weather-dependent and could affect residents in the greater Chadds Ford area during the week of Aug. 18 through Aug. 25. PennDOT recommends that motorists allow extra time if they are traveling through one of the construction zones.

Rumble strip installations will occur on Route 52 in Kennett Township and West Chester Borough and Newark Road in New Garden Township on Monday, Aug. 18 until Friday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lane restrictions will be required between Unionville and Creek Roads in West Chester, between Burnt Mill and Hillendale Roads in Kennett Township and between Church Road and Route 842 in New Garden Township.

Rumble strips will also be installed on Duttons Mill Road between Route 352 and Mercer Place in Aston Township. The work will be done from Monday, Aug. 18, through Friday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Water main installation will continue to generate lane restrictions on North New Street between Hannum Avenue and Market Street in West Chester. The work will be done from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday, Aug. 22.

Gas main installation is scheduled for Tanguy Road in Thornbury Township on Tuesday, Aug. 19, through Friday, Aug. 29. Tanguy will be closed with a posted detour between Westtown Road and Route 926 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The roundabout project continues on Wawaset Road in Pocopson Township, which will be closed until Sept. 26 between Lenape-Unionville and Corinne Roads; detours are posted. Lenape-Unionville Road, which will be closed through Sept. 29 between Route 52 and Locust Grove Road and between Pocopson and Locust Grove Roads for roundabout reconstruction, also has detours posted.

Burnt Mill Road in Kennett Township is closed and detoured between Norway and Spring Mill Roads indefinitely while crews work to repair damage to a bridge that collapsed on April 24.

Route 202 in both directions will continue to require a traffic pattern shift between the Route 401 and Rt. 30 interchanges through May 2016 during the ongoing road reconstruction and widening.

Work is continuing to repair overhead bridge damage on northbound U.S. 202 in West Goshen Township. The right lane will be closed at all times between the Paoli Pike and U.S. 322 interchanges. A completion date has not been announced.

Bank robbery in Kennett

Bank robbery in Kennett

Chester County authorities are hoping that someone can identify the robbery suspect who held up a Kennett Square bank this morning.

District Attorney Tom Hogan said the robbery took place at the Santander Bank, 313 W. Cypress St., in the borough.  He said a 5-foot-6 male with medium build entered the bank at approximately 8:50 a.m., announced a hold-up, and gave the teller the impression that he had a weapon or explosive.

The suspect was wearing a zip-up grey hoodie with a “Puma” logo on the left chest. He had a short goatee and wore blue jeans, a black Eagles hat, and sunglasses, Hogan said.

The suspect stole cash and placed it in a blue canvas bag with black straps before fleeing on foot, Hogan said. Kennett Square Police are being assisted by the Chester County Detectives, the Pennsylvania State Police, New Garden Township Police and Kennett Township Police. Anyone with information should contact the Kennett Square Police Department at 610-444-0501.

State boosting transportation improvements

Gov. Tom Corbett announced that the State Transportation Commission has updated Pennsylvania’s 12-Year Transportation Program with a boost in transportation improvements.

The new plan anticipates $63.2 billion being available over the next 12 years for improvements to roads, bridges, transit systems, airports and railroads. That compares with $41.6 billion in the last update two years ago, a news release said.

The newly adopted program, which takes effect Oct. 1, anticipates $12.3 billion being available for highway and bridge projects in the first four years. during the first four years, public transit is in line for $7.9 billion; aviation, $370 million; the state’s rail-freight systems, $228 million; and the newly created multimodal fund, $284 million, the release said.

The update will now be submitted to the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration for review and approval. The Federal Highway Administration coordinates with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to review the plan’s conformity with air-quality requirements, according to the release.

Highway funds listed in the 12-Year Program are distributed statewide using a formula that weighs population, lane miles and vehicle miles traveled. Bridge funds are distributed based on the condition of each structure. The commission consists of 10 appointed citizens and the majority and minority chairpersons of the state House and Senate Transportation committees.

State law requires the commission to review and update the 12-Year Program every two years. No capital project can move forward unless it is included in the 12-Year Program.

Some of the key projects in the updated 12-Year Program include the expansion of the Conchester (U.S. 322) Highway between Route 1 and Interstate 95 in Delaware County.
